From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Life coach Miller collaborates with Frisch, a researcher and clinical psychologist, to create a fascinating book that connects the research on goal-setting with the new science of positive psychology. Turns out these two have a symbiotic relationship, for as Miller says, [H]appiness requires having clear-cut goals in life that give us a sense of purpose and direction.... when we make progress toward attaining goals in one area of life, we raise our overall life satisfaction in other areas because of the 'spillover' effect. Each chapter focuses on ways to increase happiness and self-efficacy, and directs readers to a particular life list at the back of the book. These range from 100 Things to Do Before I Die to a list of mood-boosters that bring Jolts of Joy or a Web of Influence Map, where readers can chart how the closest people in their lives reflect their values; research indicates that rates of obesity and smoking are determined by who we socialize with. The authors share ingenious tips on reminders (cellphone ring tones, screen savers) that will help readers achieve long-term goals by suggestion. An excellent resource list rounds out the book. Review
Instead of making New Year's resolutions, it may be more beneficial to assemble a goal-setting list. So believe positive psychologist/life coach Miller and clinical psychologist Frisch (Baylor Univ.), who have put together dozens of interactive exercises and assessments to guide readers in self-discovery and life-list creation. Whether or not readers follow through with every assignment, they will undoubtedly be inspired to think about goals and live more consciously and productively. Recommended for all libraries. --Library Journal

Highly recommended for life coaches and their clients
By Dr. Cathy Goodwin
A good book that brings some sanity and science to the world of self-help. They present a number of strategies that won't be new to anyone familiar with self-help and life coaching.

Outstanding chapter on "prime," i.e, environmental influences on behavior. For instance, people made different choices when a briefcase was on a table than when a backpack was in the same place.

Best parts:

Good discussion goals and the inadequacy of the "SMART" goal acronym.

Excellent chapter on "grit" and determination.

Based on solid research, not just a series of anecdotes.

Nice worksheets and exercises.

Weak points:

As in most self-help books, the authors give examples of people who were rewarded by doing the "right" thing. For instance, they show people who benefited from taking risks. By definition, risks can have negative consequences, too. I would like to see some examples of people who took risks that did not work out, but turned the situation around or were glad they took the risk. Colette Dowling's book, The Cinderella Complex, includes a cautionary tale of the wrong kind of risk-taking.

The chapter on relationships is geared toward the "married with children" set. Considerable research shows that making friends has become increasingly difficult. Adding friends on Facebook or connections on LinkedIn rarely leads to meaningful relationships; they're more helpful for business and career.

The discussion of retirement follows the stereotype that older people want to trade off money for "doing good."

Many action suggestions are impractical. For instance, The section on neighborhood makes suggestions that will be difficult for many people especially those living in a city.

Definitely recommended with a caveat that some strategies will be challenging to apply to your own life.

persisting at meaningful life challenges
By Todd B. Kashdan
There are far too many self-help books out there and in recent years, an abundance of books on happiness. Miller & Frisch distinguish their book from the pack. It is nearly impossible to read this book without reflecting on your life goals, what exists in your life that facilitates them, what obstacles get in the way, what successes can you build on from your past, and most interestingly, what occurs on the fringes of conscious awareness that pushes you toward your goals or pulls you away from them. Despite studying and teaching positive psychology for nearly a decade, I found myself scribbling all over the pages. By the time I finished, a list of new life goals emerged, elaborating new meaningful themes to direct my limited time and energy.

I suspect people are skeptical of a book titled "Creating your best life" and they should be. The authors seem to beckon skepticism and in response, do an excellent job of providing the scientific basis for the main points and exercises in every chapter. The reason that this book is compelling is that it has great forward momentum. If you ever read a book written by scientists, you know that smooth prose is the exception not the rule. This book is an easy read (and I mean this as a profound compliment). Guided by ample scientific research, this book provides the necessary tools for someone to immediately improve their quality of life.

Create your own life
By Steve Burns
If you are looking for a book to help you draw out a map of your future, this is it. I have always been big about writing out goals and achieving them. This one task has kept put me on a track to achieve success in many areas of life. Like losing 60 pounds, acquiring a large net worth, becoming debt free, having a happy marriage, and many other smaller things. I believe you will never get any where unless you know where you are going. I have read several books on writing goals and this one is by far the best. This books author connects the research on goal setting with the new science of positive psychology, giving us all the tools we could ever need to move ahead in life and keep going past every setback or challenge that will occur. The book is based on research not on the authors personal opinion. That is what I like about the book, it is backed by science and statistics. The book gives you seventeen areas of life to construct your priorities with from health, self-esteem, values, spiritual life, money, work, play, learning, creativity, service, love, friends, children, relatives, home, neighborhood, and community. It will allow you to focus your time and energy on areas that you find most important. The back of the book has several exercises you can go through to get your creative juices flowing along with a 100 item "bucket list" you can create for yourself. This book really shows you step by step what you will need to achieve your goals. You will need to develop willpower, you will see how to get it. You have to take educated risks. You will need relationships with people that support you in your goals. You have to have the grit to not quit when setbacks occur. See how to write your own brief but powerful mission statement. Celebrate the wins along your journey. The speed bumps might slow you down but do not let them stop you. This book covers all these principles in great detail. This is one of the five books I will give to my children on their 18th birthday. I wish I would have had this book when I was young. I did have a book about written goals and it has been a powerful life guiding principle for me for the past twenty. I will return to this book for many years as I accomplish my bucket list. This is a book that will change your life if you let it.

While the book deals with education that uses technology, the focus is on teaching and learning and how its management can be facilitated through technology. Key features include:

  • Chapter authors frame their topic in terms of empirical research (past and present) and discuss the nature of current practice in terms of that research. Future research needs are discussed in relation to both confirmed practice and recent changes in the field.
  • Section one provides a unique review of the theories that support distance education pedagogy.
  • Section six includes a unique review of distance education as a component of global culture.

Important Distance Education reference
By ALACIEL F ALMEIDA
This review is for the Third Edition of the "Handbook of Distance Education". The book is one of the most valuable instruments to help me keep updated in the field of Distance Education. It is the most complete source of research in this field, not only for the well selected articles, but also for the excelent collection of references in each article. Congratulations for Professor Moore! I have examined both the paper and the digital edition. In the Kindle version, I got problems in identifying some graphic details.

Very clear and well written book
By Eric Aros
I'm a college student and this was the assigned text to read for my Sales Management class. This book was very easy to understand. The concepts were explained, so that even someone, such as myself who has zero experience in sales could understand what the authors meant. Most textbooks contain useless information, but this one had information that I could use in my life once I graduate from college (example: how to be a team builder and ways to approach being in sales).

For academic use only
By Aggelos Vlassopoulos
This book provides a wide view of sales management through the eyes of an academic. Very good for students and anyone who wants to know all about sales.

However, this book is nothing more than all-the-theory-in-one-book for a professional.

So:

Good for students

Good for the library

Not really aiming at professionals

The Dreamer and the Fantasy Relationship, by Natalie Lue

Most people if asked, would deny that they'd ever had a fantasy relationship as they are associated with pretending to be with someone or in something that's non-existent, however, it's time for you to change what you think you know.

In this modern age of texts, email, Facebook, online dating, and casual relationships, it's never been so easy to find yourself in a crumb filled fantasy relationship. An increasing number of people are satisfied with sprinklings of attention and interaction which they use to give themselves the illusion of being loved, cared for and in control because they get to avoid commitment, intimacy, and 'full-on' rejection.

The Dreamer and the Fantasy Relationship is for every woman who's been caught short by their overactive imagination and their great expectations.

Struggled to get over a relationship that didn't truly exist?

Don't understand how you wound up spending years with someone you hardly see?

Keep letting your assumptions and projections run away with you?

It's time to come back down to earth and face reality so you can take action in your present, face your real future, and get happy.

Acting as a companion guide to Mr Unavailable and the Fallback Girl, the no holds barred 'bible' for understanding excuse filled, commitment dodging, unavailable men and the women that they fall back on for an ego stroke, shag, and a shoulder to lean on, I wanted to introduce a new role due to the sheer number of emails and comments I receive from women who actually believe that the crumbs that they're receiving, particularly via cheap talk, grand promises, texts, email and Facebook are a relationship or 'love'.

You'll know you need to read this if:

You're an Escapist, dissatisfied with your current relationship, mentally checking out, complaining about your expectations not being met, and even starting an affair with someone else.

You're a Crusher, 'loving' and admiring someone from a distance that puts you in that unreciprocated feelings setting.

You're a Virtual, spending too much time surfing dating sites, relying on the written word and getting high off the buzz of a text or email coming through.

You're a Tabber, angry, hurt and feeling rejected because your relationship is over so regaining a sense of control by devoting your time and energy to tracking your ex via social networking and poking around in his life.

The Dreamer and the Fantasy Relationship explains how fantasy relationships work, why they're so attractive, the types of fantasy relationship and Mr Unavailable that you're likely to be involved with, and provides practical tips and tools for breaking the habit and tackling issues such as rejection avoidance, and fear of abandonment, criticism and conflict. Delivered with a my no-fluff dose of reality and plenty of humour, I want to empower you to let go of the illusions so that you can be available for an available relationship in the real world.

Helped me so much!
By Amazon Customer
I stumbled on this book at just the right time. I've been living in my mind (constant daydreaming, fantasing, etc.) since a traumatic event in my childhood. I didn't realize, that as the years went by, it was becoming more frequent and negatively effecting my real life. When relationships ended, to avoid the pain, i kept the relationships going in my head. It's supposed to be a pleasant escape but in REALITY i was letting this fantasy eat away at me. Mrs. Lue helped me see that i have been taking a few good qualities about someone and then letting my fantasy make them into this perfect person. When this "perfect" person rejects me i of course feel worthless. Truth is in reality these people i pine for aren't even worth my affection. Natalie Lue is teaching me how to WAKE UP and see, think and act realistically when it comes to love and loving myself. I recommend this book to everyone. Maybe most people don't dream as much as i do but thanks to Disney and romantic films, i think most of us have a false sense of reality when it comes to love.

For Anyone With an Online Romance
By J. Robbins
After a couple of abusive relationships, I now have a better understanding of the pitfalls I stumble into. I found this book at just the right time. I was looking for a stable relationship with someone who could love me, help me feel safe and happy. I thought I found that in a person I met through an online game. We texted, emailed and even talked on the phone. After a medical diagnosis, he just disappeared. It broke my heart because I thought we were great friends and now he wouldn't answer my calls, return texts or emails. I didn't understand why he would disappear when I needed a friend the most. With the help of this book, I realize he wasn't the person I was hoping he was. I realize that I can make myself happy with someone that I can meet and someone that is willing to live with me in reality instead of all the "some day's" or "when's". Although it is difficult, with the help and advice in this book, I'm moving on. I know that by the time I feel better physically that I will be much stronger emotionally, mentally and spiritually.

If you find yourself "crushing" on an unavailable person, co-worker or you think you've met the perfect guy online, find yourself selling yourself short while you let someone else use your time to decide what you should do ... this book is for you. It won't be an automatic fix and will require some change inside yourself, after all ... if we aren't' willing to change, we will fall into the same traps and pitfalls.

I know some have commented on the poor spelling and grammar, but if you need the help enough it shouldn't be a bother. I also enjoy well written grammar with correct spelling, but I think fixing me is far more important.

"This is an excellently prepared textbook for a senior/first year graduate level course. It explains physical concepts in an easily understandable manner. In addition, a problem set is included after each chapter. Very few books on the market today have this choice. I would definitely use it for teaching a medical imaging class at USC."

Great book for learning the basics of Medical Imaging
By Jenn
I bought this book for a senior level Electrical Engineering course in Biomedical Imaging at Michigan State University. The book does a very good job of covering the fundamentals of X-Ray, CT, MRI, Ultrasound and Nuclear Medicine. I actually read the entire book and have found it to be a valuable reference in learning the material. This books will be most helpful to those that have a solid background in math covered in an undergraduate engineering program, especially Fourier Transforms which are essential in these imaging techniques.

Seeking Diversity: Language Arts with Adolescents (Perspectives in Neural Computing), by Linda Rief

Seeking Diversity is the result of watching, listening to, and learning from adolescents. It is also about a teacher, a learner engaged in the process of coming to know herself as a reader and writer in her own classroom. It is a chronicle of apprenticeship, where the students do astonishing things as readers and writers because their teacher believes they can, because she expects them to, and because she is right there beside them-reading, writing, questioning, thinking, learning, and growing.

Linda Rief takes the philosophies and ideas of Atwell, Romano, Graves, Murray, Calkins, and the Goodmans and makes them her own. She adapts them to her classroom, her students, her style, her constraints and invites other teachers to do the same- stretch the ideas, make them theirs, but above all, trust the students.

Seeking Diversity is organized chronologically, following Linda and her students from September through June. Teachers will find especially helpful:

  • organization techniques-materials, the room, and expectations
  • ways of using life experiences and literature to immerse the students in meaningful writing and reading
  • evaluation beliefs and techniques that focus on process as well as product and on self-evaluation over outside assessment
  • portfolios from a range of students-what's in them, who chooses, and what they show us
  • a new look at art as an integral part of students' literacy
  • an appendix filled with handouts for both students and parents
  • numerous lists of best-liked books for individualized reading, reading aloud, and reading together.

Review
“In order for any classroom's diverse population to progress toward a sense of quality and a broadening of mind, expectations must be high and individual goals must be recognized. Linda Rief does more than show her students the way, she joins the journey.”–Voices from the Middle

Beyond the One Size Fits All Curriculum
By Michael Carr
In an educational world that demands conformity it is a rare treat to experience a teacher who celebrates the diversity and the gifts that each student brings to the classroom. Linda Rief knows the adoloscent mind, but more importantly she understands the heart of these ever changing students. The book opens with a realistic look at what her classroom is like - real voices of real students trying to find thenselves through reading and writing. It is the generous use of the students voices that made this book such an inspiration to me. In reading this book I was struck by the rigor in the curriculum. There is an abundance of reading and writing going on all of the time. The real difference is that the subjects and the books are chosen by the students. Engaging adoloscents with choice, time, responsibility and accountability all show her masterful understanding of this age group. She also reads to her students often and writes with them. It is this mentoring that I found to be the most valuable for me. Linda Rief is a writer showing others how she writes and struggles. It is this realness that adoloscents continue to crave in school. She is the true mentor and in her chapters on writing and reading she lays out a clear theoritical foundation for why she teaches this way. Once I read this there was no going back. In the chapters on reading and writing linda puts in many expamples of student work - and it is these examples that truely show the diversity that is smothered in many language arts classrooms. Linda Rief has a voice that speaks to the middle school teacher. She is in a real school and teaches real students. Hers is the voice of experience. This is very evident in the chapter where she explains that her students sometimes do read the same book or write on the same subject. Her understanding of the balance needed for students and for the curricular demands of the profession should pull in even the most reluctant middle school teacher. But always the balance is tipped in favor of the students need for choice, for exploration, for understanding, for real mentoring, and for the goal of being a reader and a writer for life. The book also contains a wealth of material in the appendices. These materials are a starting point for those teachers who see writing and reading as a mentoring. This is a must book for new teachers and a perfect gift for those teachers with more experience. This is a book that changed the way I teach and has helped me to look for the diversity and the heart of the adoloscent mind.

Great for all levels of teachers
By Matthew Cheney
If you're looking for the perfect book for a new English teacher, this is it. But it's also great if you're looking for inspiration yourself -- and by no means do you need to be a middle school teacher to benefit from it.
My copy of this book is falling apart, because I have fled to it more frequently in times of woe than any other text on teaching. Nancie Atwell's In the Middle is also close to my heart, but Rief's book is more direct and less overwhelming and so more useful in emergencies.
I teach 11th and 12th grade English, but never has this kept Seeking Diversity from being useful, even though Rief is describing her middle school classes. The environment that helps students reach their potential is the same at almost all levels, regardless of who your students are, where they're from, or how old they are. (A qualifier: I know nothing about elementary education, and so won't presume to speak to that.)
If you're looking for lots of theory and post-structuralist analysis, this is the wrong book. But if you're after nuts and bolts, and lots of them, then Seeking Diversity is what you want. It's inspiring, empowering, and tremendously useful.

Topics in Group Theory (Springer Undergraduate Mathematics Series), by Geoff Smith, Olga Tabachnikova

The theory of groups is simultaneously a branch of abstract algebra and the study of symmetry. Designed for readers approaching the subject for the first time, this book reviews all the essentials. It recaps the basic definitions and results, including Lagranges Theorem, the isomorphism theorems and group actions. Later chapters include material on chain conditions and finiteness conditions, free groups and the theory of presentations. In addition, a novel chapter of "entertainments" demonstrates an assortment of results that can be achieved with the theoretical machinery.

Still Alive: A Holocaust Girlhood Remembered (The Helen Rose Scheuer Jewish Women's Series), by Ruth Kluger

Swept up as a child in the events of Nazi-era Europe, Ruth Kluger saw her family's comfortable Vienna existence systematically undermined and destroyed. By age eleven, she had been deported, along with her mother, to Theresienstadt, the first in a series of concentration camps which would become the setting for her precarious childhood. Kluger's story of her years in the camps and her struggle to establish a life after the war as a refugee survivor in New York, has emerged as one of the most powerful accounts of the Holocaust.

Interwoven with blunt, unsparing observations of childhood and nuanced reflections of an adult who has spent a lifetime thinking about the Holocaust, Still Alive rejects all easy assumptions about history, both political and personal. Whether describing the abuse she met at her own mother's hand, the life-saving generosity of a woman SS aide in Auschwitz, the foibles and prejudices of Allied liberators, or the cold shoulder offered by her relatives when she and her mother arrived as refugees in New York, Kluger sees and names an unexpected reality which has little to do with conventional wisdom or morality tales.

Still Alive is a memoir of the pursuit of selfhood against all odds, a fiercely bittersweet coming-of-age story in which the protagonist must learn never to rely on comforting assumptions, but always to seek her own truth.

Amazon.com Review
"Instead of God I believe in ghosts," writes the literary scholar Ruth Kluger in this harrowing memoir of life under the yellow star, a controversial bestseller in Germany.

Born in Vienna, Kluger somehow survived a girlhood spent in Theresienstadt, Auschwitz, and Gross-Rosen. Some of the lessons she imparts are surprising, as when she argues, against other historians, that the female camp guards were far more humane than their male counterparts, and when she admits that she has difficulty today queuing in line, a constant of camp life, "out of revulsion for the bovine activity of simply standing." Her memories of her youth are punctuated by sharp reflections on the meaning of the Shoah and how it should best be memorialized in a time when ever fewer survivors are left to act as witnesses. Those reflections are often angry--"Absolutely nothing good came out of the concentration camps," she writes, recalling an argument with a naive German graduate student, "and he expects catharsis, purgation, the sort of thing you go to the theatre for?"

But they are constantly provocative, too. Though readers will doubtless take issue with some of her conclusions, Kluger's insistent memoir merits a wide audience. --Gregory McNamee

From Publishers Weekly
In the 1950s, when Kluger's children were small and growing up in the U.S., she caught German measles from them. Her family doctor said, "You must have led a sheltered childhood." In reality, she spent her early years in Theresienstadt and Birkenau-Auschwitz. Kluger's memoir which has already become a bestseller in Germany is a startling, clear-eyed and unflinching examination of growing up as a Jewish girl during the Holocaust. Calmly, and chillingly, relating the everyday events of her youth Aryan students making colored paper swastikas and then asking Jewish students to judge them, breaking the law to go to an Aryan movie house to see Disney's Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and being challenged by a neighbor Kluger charts how she and her family moved from a middle-class Viennese life to dealing with the constant threat of death in the camps. Kluger's style is wry ("the muse of history has a way of cracking bad jokes at the expense of the Jews"), and she can shock readers with simple, honest admissions, such as her embarrassment, in the 1970s, when her mother asks unanswerable questions of a speaker about the death camps. Kluger, who is now professor emerita at UC-Irvine and has won awards for this memoir as well as her literary criticism, has written a deeply moving and significant work that raises vital questions about cultural representations of the Holocaust (why did the highly praised, socially conscious 1947 film Gentleman's Agreement never mention "the Jewish catastrophe"?) and searches for what it means to be a survivor. Already compared by European critics to the work of Primo Levi and Elie Wiesel, this is an important addition to Jewish, Holocaust and women's studies. (Nov.) Forecast: This is a standout in the crowded field of Holocaust memoirs and should have strong sales.

From Library Journal
"How can I keep my readers from feeling good about the obvious drift of my story away from the gas chambers and the killing fields and towards the postwar period, where prosperity beckons?" This question rests at the heart of Kluger's story of survival: how to tell of her own escape from a concentration camp without rousing a sense of well-being and relief in readers who get wrapped up in her own "happy ending"? Kluger solves this dilemma by deftly combining her own compelling narrative with a rigorous commentary that is sure to provoke, challenge, and unsettle most readers. She tells the dramatic story of living in concentration camps but decries the preservation of these camps as museums: "[the museums] don't take you in, they spit you out." And while she married one of the American paratroopers who participated in the liberation, she resents the "careless and unprepared" American soldiers who could not face the exhausted, starved victims. Kluger describes herself as "inclined to question and contradict," and her memoir, translated from German by the author herself, adds a spirited and original voice to the field of Holocaust literature. Almost every page has a memorable phrase
By Joseph Psotka
Still Alive: A Holocaust Girlhood Remembered (The Helen Rose Scheuer Jewish Women's Series) by Ruth Kluger Still Alive: A Holocaust Girlhood Remembered (The Helen Rose Scheuer Jewish Women's Series)
I loved the frankness of her prose. It seems this is the next generation of holocaust survivors: the children who grew up and led fulfilling lives. Almost every page has something memorable. I went through th 200 quotes I selected on my Kindle and caem up with the top ten or so:

Recipes for gefilte fish are no recipe for coping with the Holocaust
No great poetry was composed in the concentration camps. If it were not so, one might entertain the idea that the camps were good for something, that they were, for example, a kind of catharsis, producing fine art. In fact, they weren't good for anything
The French have only recently begun to remember how they collaborated with the Nazis; it was in France that my father was handed over to the Germans.
I would have become an agnostic anyway, but the Nazis added to my disappointment the feeling of having grasped a rotten plank during a shipwreck
Even though I despised the law that excluded me, I still felt ashamed to have been found out. For shame doesn't arise from the shameful action,
but from discovery and exposure.
should be obvious by now that these pages hardly deal with the Nazis. I didn't know any Nazis, but I knew the difficult, neurotic people whom they oppressed, families who hadn't had ideal lives anymore than their Christian neighbors had.
Witness the foregoing pages, where I dusted off the ramshackle mementos of my father and brother, enjoying my stay in the attic of memory,
my hearers act surprised, assume a stance of virtuous indignation, and tell me that, given the hardships we had to endure during the Hitler period, the victims should have come closer together and formed strong bonds. Particularly young people should have done so, say the elderly. But this is sentimental rubbish and depends on a false concept of suffering as a source of moral education.
Only the language was what it had always been, the speech of my childhood with its peculiar inflections and rhythms, a sense of humor that Germans often don't get, and a wealth of malicious half tones that would be obscene in any other tongue; also an intense lyricism that easily degenerates into kitsch. I understand this language, but I don't like it. I speak it, but I wouldn't have chosen it. I am hooked on it, and it's the reason I go back for visits.

In our hearts we all know that some aspects of the Shoah have been repeated elsewhere, today and yesterday, and will return in new guise tomorrow; and the camps, too, were only imitations (unique imitations, to be sure) of what had occurred the day before yesterday

What did he expect? Auschwitz was no instructional institution, like the University of Gttingen, which he attends. You learned nothing there, and least of all humanity and tolerance.
How else are we to tell victims from victimizers? The camp sites hide as much as they communicate.
Over the years many people have asked me: "I knew X or Y, who was interned at Theresienstadt. Surely you remember him or her?" Not once have I been able to give a positive answer. Theresienstadt wasn't a village of friendly neighbors and social interaction. It was a transit station.
To the Socialists and Communists in the camps, the Jewish prisoners were inferior beings: they had learned this much from the Nazis.

in life, nothing offended me more than the generalization that the camps turned us all into brutal egotists, and whoever survived them must be morally defective. Again, the blithe refusal to look closely, to make distinctions, to reflect a little.

and it was these unknown details that haunted me. I couldn't talk to my mother about his death.
"There is some evidence that they tried to comfort one another, and wouldn't that be better than resistance?" Again the silence.

I see the other guy standing before the toilet, waiting for me to come out, no privacy anywhere. Life in a big stable. The owners occasionally show up in their ominous uniforms to make sure that the cattle behave. Makes you feel like the scum of the earth.
Only when I had children of my own did I realize that one might well decide to kill them in Auschwitz rather than wait. I now believe that I would have had the same thought and perhaps carried it out more efficiently.
Every survivor has his or her "lucky accident"--the turning point to which we owe our lives. Mine is peculiar because of the intervention of the stranger.

They exchanged recipes the same way I recited poems. At night a favorite game was to surpass each other with the recital of generous amounts of butter, eggs, and sugar in fantasy baking contests

Therefore this is not the story of a Holocaust victim and becomes less and less so as it nears the end
I write in their memory, and yet my account unavoidably turns into some kind of triumph of life

Because Konrad Lorenz became a Nazi and one of the Party's privileged professors, yet after the war became a reasonable citizen again and was awarded a Nobel Prize. Lorenz himself denied that there was such a thing as evil; there was only "aggression," a normal expression of animal behavior, and fixed action patterns, he wrote. The title of his bestseller, On Aggression, is in the original So-Called Evil (Das sogenannte Bse). A morality derived from science in the service of denial.
Martin Walser says, well, hatred of Jews was one of those variants of xenophobia which comes naturally to all men.
I think that the Jewish catastrophe can't be explained with abstract arguments taken from ethology or the mice of the veterinary science professor or Konrad Lorenz's views on the strutting rivalry of male animals.

And there were, in fact, both men and women with whorehouse fantasies who wanted to know whether I had been raped.
I'd explain the concept of Rassenschande, the rule against miscegenation Aryan style, because I found it interesting that a malicious idea could serve as protection (albeit not a foolproof one) against sexual abuse.

To make a living and support my two sons, I went back to graduate school and became a professor of German literature. For many years I had refused to have anything to do with the language, the two countries (Austria and Germany), or their people. But I was good at my new job

Though the other side persists: belligerent Israelis will say, "Jews don't walk into gas chambers anymore," as they get ready to counter violence with violence. The Jews who were gassed are the inferior Jews in this scenario, which doesn't sit well with me.)

What you have been reading is neither a translation nor a new book: it's another version, a parallel book, if you will, for my child ren and my American students.

Respect for Ruth Kluger
By Yuyao Chen
I have to read this book for a German/Austrian Jewish Culture and History class, and it was definitely a shock to me. Fortunately, I had the chance to talk to the author, Ruth Kluger, in our classroom, and it is such an absolutely mind-blowing and unique way of re-telling that part of history. She doesn't intend to gain sympathy from the audience, but simply tells the story from her own unique perspectives that's resulted from her upbringing. Also, if you have the chance, you can read the German version of this book, because the English version is almost a re-writing of the book. (The targeting audience of the German version is Germans...)

Memoirs of a Feminist Poet
By Barbara Lamar
Reading *Still Alive* was like having a conversation with someone I like and admire. A one-sided conversation, one might say, since Kluger was doing all the talking, and I was contributing nothing but my interpretation of her words. But Kluger answered many of the questions I would have asked, had she been sitting across from me. "What was it like after you escaped, when you were thrown in with Germans who were running from the approaching Allies? Did you talk to them?" I would have asked. "For them," she would have said, "it was despair, they were leaving behind everything; while for me, it was joy, because I was gaining everything -- the rest of my life." (I am not quoting the exact words from the book here, but writing the general idea from memory). "Did the culture's attitude toward you as a woman make it more difficult to recover from the humiliation you suffered as a camp inmate?" "What was it like to go from being a very private child, to being crammed into a mass of other humans?" "How was your relationship with your mother after the war, after you grew up?" "What was it like going to a strange place, having to learn a new language, a new culture?" "How could you tolerate life as a U.S. housewife in the 1950's? Of course it was far better than life in the camps, but still ..."

Kluger's personality comes across as irrepressible. Her book inspires me rather than depressing me. For example, having described her childhood compulsion to memorize poetry early in the book, Kluger mentions composing poems about the camps with (not so appropriate) catchy rhythms and rhymes, because it made them easier to memorize, and of course she had to commit them to memory since paper and writing implements were scarce, and anyhow, how else could one be sure of holding onto them? I smile as I remember that. Even as she starved for food and water, she found a way to create treasures that no one could take away from her, as long as she lived.

I have to confess that I do not read German, so I would not be able to appreciate Dr. Kluger's literary criticism. I am sad that she has not published more poetry and observations of life.
