With many colour photographs and diagrams, the book focuses on construction as a team effort and shows how various elements of design, estimating, tendering, and building contracts combine to enable these teams to work together to plan and organise construction projects that meet the needs of clients. The book covers a range of relevant topics in some detail, for example the basics of 'taking off' and the use of 'dim' paper, the building regulations and surveying processes.� Common terms and abbreviations are explained and put into context throughout the book. The coverage is completed by discussing three very different projects, including inception to topping out of a prestigious office development, illustrating how all of the technical aspects of design and legislation are put into place on real projects.

About the Author
Robert Cooke is currently a lecturer at Barking College in the School of the Built Environment teaching construction students from GCSE through to BTEC/Edexcel Higher National Certificate. He has over 35 years experience in the construction industry in building trades, surveying, representitive and teaching roles.

Great Start, Great Finish, Boredom in Between

This book starts off great. In Part I, the authors provide four classifications of lawyers that depend on the attorney's concern for others and the amount of client autonomy allowed. The classifications are: Godfather, Hitman, Guru, and Friend. It provides a great way to examine your values and decide what type of attorney you want to be (if the names weren't a giveaway, "Friend" is the optimum in the authors' eyes).

Unfortunately this book REALLY drops off from there on out (until the very end). Part II examines values, highlighting Justice, Mercy/Care, and Truthfullness. This section gets exceedingly "preachy" and is filled with the morally obvious and provides little inspiration. It was not particulalry interesting and a bit of a chore to complete.

Part III is subdivided into two chapters. The first chapter is absolutely horrible. For some reason the authors decided to make the whole chapter about Trollope's novel, 'The Warden'. It's a disorganized cut-and-paste job with multi-page excerpts and little glue holding them together.

The book concludes on a positive note, however, emphasizing the importance of working moral considerations into your client interactions. I'd give five stars for Part I and the final chapter. Unfortunately there's some mild torture in the middle that drops the overall rating to three.

Used this book as a textbook for my Professional Ethics class. While Professional Ethics are not the most fascinating subject ever, the book was well written and clear.

There are some interesting anecdotes in here; whether you believe they happened is, I suppose, up to you and your worldview. However, any derivation of "Beltane" (May 1, the beginning of summer) or any Scottish words or customs from the Babylonian "Baal" is linguistically bonkers. At best, it's wishful thinking for people who really want to believe that Celts had a Middle-Eastern origin. That's as may be, but you would think a theory of that weight would have better support than folk etymology! The anecdotes are fun and could be inspiring for role-playing games or creative work. I don't trust a lot of what this book has to say in terms of larger theories, though, because of the silly "Baal" derivation.

This is scarcely the place to trace the history of Japanese literature, but fully to understand these charming "Diaries of Court Ladies of Old Japan," it is necessary to know a little of the world they lived in, to be able to feel their atmosphere and recognize their allusions. We know a good deal about Japan to-day, but the Japan with which we are familiar only slightly resembles that of the Diaries. Centuries of feudalism, of "Dark Ages," have come between. We must go behind all this and begin again. We have all heard of the "Forty-seven Ronins" and the No Drama, of Shoguns, Daimios, and Samurais, and many of us live in daily communion with Japanese prints. It gives us pause to reflect that the earliest of these things is almost as many centuries ahead of the Ladies as it is behind us. "Shogun" means simply "General," and of course there were always generals, but the power of the Shoguns, and the military feudalism of which the Daimios and their attendant Samurais were a part, did not really begin until the middle of the twelfth century and did not reach its full development until the middle of the fourteenth; the No Drama started with the ancient religious pantomimic dance, the Kagura, but not until words were added in the fourteenth century did it become the No; and block colour printing was first practised in 1695, while such famous print artists as Utamaro, Hokusai, and Hiroshige are all products of the eighteenth or early nineteenth centuries. To find the Ladies behind the dark military ages, we must go back a long way, even to the century before their own, and so gain a sort of perspective for them and their time.

A fascinating read of real diaries Japan c.1000ce

Reading the real diaries of women in Japan c.1000 ce takes you back to a time and place that is so different yet seems so familiar to today. While the West was struggling out of the Dark Ages, there existed this culture of high literacy and sophisticated aesthetics,albeit to a select few. In no way a perfect society, it is fascinating how the mores shaped and played out historically.

Slow, but interesting.

Only for history buffs, history buffs who like detail, rather than the 'big picture.' Poor Court Ladies of Old Japan - seems that they spent most of their time changing outfits for different times of the day, different seasons of the year, different ceremonies and gatherings at court. A lot of words were devoted to descriptions of the many layers of robes or kimono a lady and her maid could contrive. Yes, some of these women wrote poetry, some (maybe all) had lovers sneaking in under cover of darkness, but many of them must have lived lives of unrelieved boredom. The most entertaining things at court were gossip and games and any occasion for a little party. The diaries move slowly and gracefully, just as life at court must have moved, describing meals and the preparation for meals - which lady in waiting would serve the Empress. Men and women each had their own world, mostly meeting for moon-viewing parties, poetry contests, and perhaps a game of shuttlecock. I'm not surprised at the women writing, they had very little else to do.

Mona Ingram's books are always a pleasure to read. The only concern with this latest offering was that I would have like it to go on longer! Very easy to become lost in these characters. And I would have liked the ex-girlfriend to have gotten more come-uppance
