About the Author
Zaid helped found Reos Partners in 2007 where he serves as Managing Partner of the Oxford office. Reos Partners is an international organization dedicated to supporting and building capacity for innovative collective action in complex social systems, which also has offices in Cambridge (MA), The Hague, Johannesburg, Melbourne, Sao Paulo and San Francisco. Zaid has worked around the world, on issues ranging from the sustainability of global food systems, child malnutrition, re-designing financial systems, climate change, and countering violent extremism. He is currently leading on a major effort to reduce global emissions; on a UK-wide strategy to practically increasing the resilience of communities and an effort on preventing state collapse in the Middle East. Over 2009-10 Zaid was an Associate Fellow of The Institute of Science, Innovation and Society, Said Business School at the University of Oxford. He has been a contributing author to the innovative green website, worldchanging.com since its launch and writes columns for the Islamic Monthly and Religion Dispatches. Important insights from cutting edge work

I devoured this book in the matter of 2 days. It's not often that I read a book and recognise it as a seminal work on the cutting edge of social change.

Zaid beautifully frames the case for taking a new approach to tackling complex challenges, at an important time for our society.

'We have technical & scientific labs to tackle our biggest technical & scientific challenges. We need social labs to tackle our biggest social challenges.'

We're currently working on what I would categorise as a 'next gen social lab' (by Hassan's definition) in New Zealand, focused on youth wellbeing. The book gave great context and language to explain our work on Lifehack HQ to our many stakeholders.

I think the concrete examples that Hassan gave of his work around the world were excellent, but I would like to have also had seen a few more examples of other independent Labs and case studies.

It was great to see a nod to the role of cultural technologies (like Theory U), entrepreneurship methodologies (like Lean Startup), and technical methodologies (like Agile & Scrum). We see these are core to underpinning our work to develop the Lab, as well as embedding in the projects and ventures which emerge from Lifehack HQ.

I'm looking forward to reading the Field guide which is soon to be released, and seeing how our work compares.

Thank you to Zaid & your colleagues for releasing this book to raise the profile and understanding of Social Labs and the revolution we hope to see in social change approaches around the world.

Heads up, for the planner..a must read

For those of us who are actively looking for ways to create change in emergent complex situations, Zaid Hassan’s book, The Social Labs Revolution offers some logical and routinely ignored steps to be considered when forced to envision a schema that is of necessity sketchy, pliable, and hopefully productive. His book gives the would be intervener, in a complex situation, a very real heads up about the difficulty and the nature of this experimental approach. His presentation is easy to read. It is for the most part a quick read, but offers helpful bits of information and cautions. I would certainly recommend it for anyone who is embarking upon a complex mission.
If you are not familiar with the unpredictable nature of complex, not just complicated and challenging problems, Hassan offers the following three criteria. Complex problems are problems that are evolving on multiple fronts at varying rates of speed and are interrelated. The very nature of the complex situation is that it is constantly emerging and shifting. Complex problems are always at a deficit position relative to the possible availability of useful data. Because the production of data is growing with such great speed, it simply is not possible to know everything that is known at the time you are considering a course of action. And, finally people must be involved in all levels and sides of the complex situation, and people change. Maintaining an awareness of these caveats, which seem to be ‘impossibilities’ actually enriches the decision process because one is not diverted by the notion that somehow a different perception, if it can be found, will convert these ‘impossibilities’ such that they amenable to the planning process and, therefore, can be solved.
Hassam assures the reader that attempting to use the planning process with both top down input and a prediction of future outcomes fails 90% of the time and yet, he explains why we continue to rely on this process, particularly and most disastrously, in times of crisis. He discusses the propensity to use a planning process in the context of muscle memory. It is the ‘go to’ method that we have been trained to employ.
Hassam emphasized the absolute necessity of including the people effected by the complex situation as part of the exploration and experimentation of possible interventions. Further, he decries the use of samples, when populations are of concern.
The very nature of the process that Hassan delineates in his book renders explicit detailing and any sort of manual-of-instructions in his presentation, an impossibility. Critics of his book are overlooking the main point. This is innately and necessarily an experimental approach. Not a laboratory experimental approach, but on the ground, on-going evolutionary, experimental approach. He does a very good job of sorting out the major issues of concern.

Timely and insightful ...

With social labs emerging all over the globe, Hassan makes a timely and insightful contribution to the field. Drawing on personal experience he moves the discussion beyond hypothetical claims and convincingly establishes why traditional planning-based approaches provide woefully inadequate responses to complex challenges.

By nature, strategic planning is predictive, formal and detached. Its processes rely on linear trajectories - design, implement, evaluate - and path-dependency is created through the investment of resources into the tactics proposed. Complex challenges involve emergent situations, that generate a constant flow of information which must be negotiated, requiring actors to continually adapt their behaviour (p.19). In this context, the predictive focus of strategic planning is highly problematic, as is the reliance on rational experts one-step removed from the issues and from the political realities of implementation.

Social labs are positioned as 'platforms' that are purposefully configured to address the unique characteristics of complex challenges, taking a prototyping-based approach to developing responses. Hassan defines social labs as involving teams of diverse participants (social), that generate ongoing and sustained efforts (experimental), focused on addressing the root cause of the issue (systemic) (p.3). Social labs draw on a range of techniques and tools, but it is the interaction of these three elements that set them apart as a truly strategic model.

In making the case, Hassan draws on considerable personal experience with several social labs. Providing rich food for thought, his accounts include discussion of the difficulties, failures and learnings - a generous sharing, true to the iterative and experimental nature of social labs. The 'seven how-tos' of setting up a social lab (Ch.8) provide further practical insights.

The balance between conceptual discussion (why) and useful practical content (how) make this a 'must read' for anyone working with complex challenges, and especially those that advise them.

Geoffrey Munn is the Managing Director of Wartski Ltd, a firm of antique dealers in London specialising in European precious metalwork. He is co-author of Pre-Raphaelite to Arts and Crafts Jewellery and author of both Castellani and Giuliano - Revivalist Jewellers of the 19th Century and The Triumph of Love - Jewellery 1530-1930. He is also the jewellery specialist on the BBC's Antiques Roadshow.

An extraordinary history of an ancient jewelry form

Geoffrey Munn's superb "Tiaras" is a treat in every possible sense of the word. I'll be perfectly frank in admitting that I bought the book purely to drool over the photographs (which are sumptuous). And yet without intending to be educated, I ended up learning a great deal from Munn's concise and accurate text.
Munn has served as the jewelry consultant and appraiser for the BBC version of "Antiques Roadshow" for some years, and his expertise is immediately evident in "Tiaras." He gives a detailed-but-never-overwhelming history of these crown-like adornments, from ancient Egypt and Rome (where they began as wreaths of foliage worn by nobility) all the way through the 20th century.
You would think that only bejewelled tiaras would be represented here, but this is not the case. Of course there are magnificent examples in all manner of precious metals and faceted gemstones, but there is also a variety of unusual pieces, such as . . .
. . . a black-and-white banded agate tiara designed specifically for use when the wearer is in mourning;
. . . an improbably lovely washed beechwood (yes, wood!) tiara designed by Queen Elizabeth's nephew, Viscount Linley, a famed furniture designer, and modeled here by his lovely wife;
. . . a rock-crystal tiara hand-engraved with Russian arabesques and set with a shimmering array of rose-cut and brilliant diamonds;
. . . a foliate-and-floral tiara in which the three-dimensional elements decorating the piece are set "en tremblant," meaning that they quiver as though alive with every subtle movement of the wearer's head;
. . . a French Art Nouveau tiara hand-carved from cow horn and set with glowing moonstones to resemble a thickly forested grove thronged with, perhaps, fireflies;
You will learn all sorts of wonderful things here, such as the impact of Art Nouveau on the formerly always-symmetrical tiara form; the influence of Art Deco in bringing the naturalistic Art Nouveau influence back into line with the advances of the Machine Age; the ability of many tiaras to be taken apart and broken down into necklaces, bracelets, and brooches; and the impact upon tiaras of the pendulum of fashion.
The photographs are really quite something to behold. The gemstones are fiery and brilliant, casting off every bit of light they catch. The pictures are crisply detailed and utterly saturated with color. The tiaras are shown both on their own and on the heads of some of their lucky owners. The book is an utter delight.

A must-have for royalty and historical jewelry fans

This is a beautiful book with lots of photos (many in color) of tiaras from the past to the near present, focusing mainly on the 1800-1960s (although the Spenser tiara that Diana wore is shown and described). The author provides detailed descriptions of the jewelry, from close-up detailed photos to its origin and history. He has photos of the Romanov tiaras and other jewelry, as well as Empress Josephine's and Empress Marie-Eugenie's. He also includes the English royal tiaras - from Queen Victoria, Princess Margaret, and Elizabeth, among others. This is the first comprehensive history of tiaras as objects in their own right, not as items in histories of particular jewellers. The book is sumptiously produced with fantastic illustrations - the photos are incredible - and the text is engrossing. If you are interested in jewellery then this book is essential! Ava Branson's book The Project is a quick easy read. "Monty" short for Mariantha, needs to earn some extra money. Short of something illegal she doesn't have many options. Her sister encourages her to get her writings publish. Monty has been writing since she was a little girl and believes this is a good idea. There is only one problem, she needs help someone from her past, professor Liam Gallagher. Monty always had the biggest crush on Liam that was until he told her she needed to be spending more time with friends her own age. What Monty did not know was that Liam had feelings for Monty but he would not cross that professor/student line. After 4 years she suddenly shows up and needs his help. After reading her manuscripts, Liam doesn't know if he can help without claiming her first.

He broke the tense pause. "I'll help you" he repeated. "What exactly do you want me to do?' Monty's lips trembled, partly in relief and partly because the tone of his voice rattled her. What did she want from him? A bubble of hysteria threatened to surface when her mind flew to all the things she wanted from him. If he only knew.

Well written, easy to follow story line of love and temptation. Steamy moments you won't want to miss! Can Liam hold off? Will Monty fill her desire? You have to read to find out! Worth every moment! If you follow my reviews, then you know I don't give spoilers!

About the Author

Kenneth Laws is Professor Emeritus of Physics at Dickinson College. He has been active in the Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet and has instructed Dickinson students in ballet throughout the 1980s and 1990s. He is the author of two books about physics and dance and is the leading expert on the subject.

As Much Science As The Dancer Ever Should Need.

The question of how a knowledge of the science behind the movement of the human body helps students of dance learn to dance better is always discussed. Like the author, I too am both a physicist and a ballet dancer. I have found that the most important thing to learn in ballet is the imagery that works for you, and sometimes science can actually get in the way. Take walking for example: if we had to analyze ever movement in walking we would never be able to move. I should also point out that science still does not thoroughly understand walking, let alone dancing! Still, it is helpful in some places to understand, at least a little, what is happening in a movement or static pose. This book does a surprisingly fine job of covering most of the pertinent topics and some topics you would not have thought of asking about. I liked the fact that the author does not over simplify some topics, which is often done in elementary explanations. Science usually tries to abstract and simplify in order to explain phenomena, but this can lead to problems. Take, for example, the case of static balance on a point. If you approximate the human body as a rigid body, it is impossible to explain stable equilibrium on a point. Rigid bodies can only achieve unstable equilibrium over a point. But human beings are not rigid! In ballet, we can achieve stable balance over a point for an indefinite period of time(it is very difficult and rarely seen in performance but often in ballet class). This book actually mentions this and explains how it is done. It even includes a discussion of how much a cushioned floor will reduce shock to the dancer's joints. Many illustrations and photos are also included. This is the best book available on this subject, and for those who want to explore this topic further, this is the best place to start.

Absolutely incredible!

This book is INCREDIBLE!

I have several years of different kinds of dance and dance-related background (social dancing - swing, tango, etc.; yoga, pilates, ballet, ...) I also have a strong background in mathematics, physics, computer science (will have a Ph.D. in a few months) and related disciplines.

If you have some college-level physics background, or even a solid understanding of high-school physics, chances are that you can work out many of the things in this book on your own. But it takes time, and you may not have the enthusiasm. (In fact, after reading this book you may get the enthusiasm to actually work out a few things.) On the other hand, if you have this kind of background, then reading this book is simple, very enjoyable, and also a great learning experience. You do not have to understand everything. If you understand one idea from each chapter - that is more than enough to read this book. (For example, if the only things you understand from the chapter on pirouettes is that it makes sense to push into the floor with both legs in opposite directions. Another idea you may get from another chapter is - why your body wants to lean in the direction you are starting to fall to actually save you from falling.)

This is great for learning dance on top of your scientific background. In minutes you pick up things that would take months to discover. You start applying them immediately. Very quickly (if you devote some time to thinking over this book) it creates a framework in your mind. You come to a dance class, and you understand so much more, because many of the things can be easily explained in the framework of this book. In other words, the book gives you a quick foundation to build on top, if you have intellect and years of education, rather than years of dance background (then you already do have a foundation).

Besides, this book gives you a better understanding of physics. Especially if you are more of a dancer than a thinker, then, I would assume (not sure though) you can get a lot of physics out of it. That is, you can use the book the other way round. You know how something feels, and then you can relate to the physical explanation.

I am not, however, sure that this book would be of equal benefit to those who don't know much physics. Generally speaking, I would highly recommend to every dancer to actually learn some physics. Especially if you are in college, take a course in basic Newtonian mechanics. (This can make even more sense for a dancer, than learning anatomy or music.) The author of the book stresses it a lot, many dancers without a science background do many things that are counterproductive. It takes just a little scientific thinking to recognize these mistakes and stop wasting time. Just like it is useful to know how your body works to e.g. strech safely and efficiently, it is also useful to know how nature works to dance better.

If you ask "What does it feel like, when you know more physics, how does it help to dance?" --- I can try to answer. You know how it feels when you notice which way you are falling (out of balance or out of alignment) - forward, sideways, etc., right? You notice, then you fix it. After this book, especially if you have some physics background to relate to, but perhaps even without it, you will start to notice how having your feet further apart makes it easier to rotate (e.g. pirouette from 4th), how lifting your leg in Arabesque Pirouette slows you down (unless you lift it higher than 90 degrees), how sacrificing turnout before a grand jete makes your jump longer and higher; how you get more tired when doing slower jumps then when doing faster jumps, and other kinds of things. The world will become more clear for you, easier to understand; it will make more sense.

If you do some other dance style, you would also definitely benefit from this book. (You would benefit much more if you supplmenent your dancing by taking some ballet classes, at least for a year, and then you can apply this book to your dance style.) If you do acrobatics, martial arts, etc., you can greatly benefit from this book as well, but again, you need to be able to relate to this book. You need to know some ballet (better by personal experience) and/or some physics, at least on a basic level (e.g. 2nd Newton's law, F=ma).

If you are a physicist, note that this book is not technical. It has some appendices (still pretty basic) and plenty of references, some, presumably, to more technical materials. So you can use it as a starting point. (Not sure there is much technical research on the physics of dance or related activities.)

Overall, a great book. Standing ovation!

Typos/ Editing mistakes

Many mistakes in the practice tests. The answer listed in the Answer Key would say one thing and then something different in the Answer Explanation section. This happened at least three times, and makes it really difficult to judge my score accurately.

Mistakes

There are mistakes in the practice tests. At least, the ones on the CD. Mostly these are math related, but where there's smoke, there may be fire. Also, there are some important sections that appear in the math review of the ETS Official GRE book that I don't see here - mostly related to data analysis. but also factorials and such. I wasn't really concerned with verbal, mostly the math, and this book was a good re-introduction with some ok practice tests - but then I found the mistakes and I got annoyed that I wasn't as prepared as I should be.

I went through this book and took all 8 of their practice exams. It gave me a sense that I would perform better on the GRE than I actually did. Now, I'm re-taking it and preparing with a different book.

Ancestor's Path

After Reading Malidoma Some's book, Of Water & the Spirit, I felt compelled to find a way to honor my ancestors and learn more about our ancient cultures and history. This book is awesome and answered so many questions and alleviated many of my fears that I had in regards to ancestral reverence. Initially when I searched for the book, it was out of print. I tried for several months unsuccessfully to contact the author and finally asked my ancestors to help me. To my surprise, the very next day, I received an email from the author and was absolutely elated at how fast/anxious our ancestors are to help us. Once I received the book, I was not disappointed. The books addressed many questions that came up on things I was unsure about. I didn't want to do anything out of ignorance that my ancestors woud find offensive. This book is an excellent starting place to assist you with setting up your altar and going forward. I was very delighted when I came across the powerful prayers that totally resonate with you when you say them. This author has a way of putting the emotions/concerns that you feel/have into beautiful prayers that feel healing to your soul. This book also contains information on spiritual cleansing and rituals. This is the only book that I could find that provided me with a wealth of information on ancestral reverance. It pretty much contains everything you need to know without having to buy other books to complete your research/tasks. Any person from any religion and walk of life can benefit from the information provided in this book. I also appreciate her sharing some of her personal stories/experience which I'm sure many of us can relate to. I have recommended it to many family and friends and I strongly feel it will prove to be a "jewel" in the times we are currently facing. After studying more about our culture and history, I learned and realized how valuable and important it is to honor those who shoulders we stand upon. They went through so much to give us the freedom we have today. Even more important, the ancient ancestors were MAGNIFICENT and made awesome contributions to humanity (and all over this continent) that will make you jaw dropping proud and honored to have even a small drop of their blood in your body. It's sad that many of us don't know our true history, culture and why we are in the condition that we are in today. The brainwashing, fears, our own ignorance and the spoon fed lies that was shoved into our consciousness - as it relates to the true history of our culture and ancestors are keeping us in bondage and fear and lost. Study your true culture and the history of how we came to worship the way we do today and you will realize the value and importance of ancestral reverence.
