About the Author
"Facundo, un chico de otro mundo," is something I heard very frequently when I was little. I never considered myself "superior" or special in any way; I always had a very humble and reserved way of being. My humor is based on nonsense and silliness. My goodwill is based on karma; "Do good unconditionally, it is up to the universe for it to come back to you." I had always been intrigued and curious about the unknown; always kept an insatiable thirst for Philosophy.

My roots are from Argentina, which my family provided me with culture, intellectualism and purpose, and I'm very grateful to say that I've lived in Venezuela as well, during my younger years, which enriched me very profoundly in feeling people's generosity and joy freely. It was when I traveled to United States where I began to mold who I was by reading Literature, watching Films, composing Music, and studying Art.

After high school, I started attending to a philosophical course of Christian Kabbalah and practiced meditation frequently. My entertainment has always been learning, so, naturally, I began to investigate more about psychology, the archetypes, alchemy, astrology, the tarot, metaphysics, mythology, world literature, philosophy, spirituality, and the Mind.

I followed Music and Literature through college. Recognizing that I had a natural urge to express myself through music, I kept playing classical music with piano lessons and studying music theory for pleasure. Music reflected to me that language in itself is music, the only difference is that, in literature, the idea of the words�carry the thoughts to our conscience for others to understand what we are expressing. I often say that, as influences, I have Edgar Allan Poe in my right hand and Fr�d�ric Chopin in my left. It was through Music and Literature where I began to understand that the key for the development of our conscience is Communication.

It has been said that writing a book is like giving birth – to a story, to characters with personalities, to dialogue, to scenes, to action – all resulting in a climactic end – the birth of a new book lovingly presented to the world. And along this same line, the author is the creator, giving life to this new creation through the written word.
Never before have I read anything quite like Facundo Raganato's The Author or The Characters' Short Living Story. It is truly a work of literary genius.
The author captures the essence of his own role in the literary process, along with the roles of his characters and even the reader, who keep the characters alive as long as he or she is immersed in the story. It all begins much like Genesis – darkness, nothingness and infinite space – no boundaries open to interpretation by all three parties – author, characters and reader.
The stage is set as six characters huddle in this void, each wondering who they are, how they got there and what will happen next. Do they have a past; do they have a future? The author takes the reader along for the ride as they embark on their journey – each with differing personalities and perspectives that compel them to think, act and react in specific ways.
It is essentially a journey of discovery and self-discovery that tests their true worth through various challenges. In the process, the author determines their value to the overall story – killing off some; saving others. Although this could be viewed as a merciless act – and some characters actually view it as such – it is vital to the refinement of the overall story.
At the same time the author makes use of a multitude of allegories. An allegory en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allegory is a literary device wherein there is more than one meaning. In this case, the author uses his character's words and actions to reveal deeper spiritual truths.
This truly one-of-a-kind work is also full of metaphors: author/creator/God; characters/humans; fiction/reality; characters' struggles/human struggles; overcoming challenges/life's challenges; faith in the author/faith in self/faith in a creator; the characters' search for truth/wisdom in the real world/eventual enlightenment; and on it goes.
And as a reader, I could not help relating all of these to both the physical and spiritual worlds in which we live out our lives. While I note “God,” this spiritual journey that the characters go on could easily relate to any spiritual belief and the truths they hold.
As you read this book, it is necessary to take your time – to fully understand the symbolism hidden within its pages. For instance, the over-riding importance of going with, instead of without in our search for understanding and expansion of consciousness. The value of meditation and the ability to create one's own story not just on paper but also in life.
This is one book that you will want to read more than once to ensure that its universal truths are instilled in your mind – which as this reader sees it, is more important than the actual mechanics of the story that the author has created. We all have much to learn from Raganato's work. If we could only put the lessons into practice, our world would be a much better place.

Facundo Raganato’s surrealistic novel, The Author or The Characters Short Living Story, from Harvard Square Editions is a metaphysical exploration of the meaning of life, and the trappings of reality. The Author is in the great tradition of Luigi Pirandello’s Six Characters in Search of an Author, an absurdist play where the characters seek meaning from their director, and question their reality. This kind of surrealistic philosophical romp plays well on stage. The one act play, “The Script” by Kamron Kiltgaard, another recent permutation of the same idea, features characters discovering the script of their lives (for that afternoon, anyway) and debating the philosophical ramifications. The Author begins in a similar way, when Henry, Violet, Leo, Kimberly, Joe, Lisa find themselves in a “spiritual Twilight Zone” with the clothes on their back, and few resources. They spend most of the novel coming to grips with who they are, debating, and navigating a fantastical world with no exit.
The Author’s premise is very much like a surreal reality show, as the characters begin to play off each other immediately, and they discover very quickly that their surroundings do not obey the laws of physics. Writing erases off of walls, wood floors tear in half, etc. This is also happening for reader as well, as the authorial voice interjects narration among the story’s dialogue. Raganato’s premise is to strip away the pretense of the author, and in a show of meta-ness, reveal the clockwork behind the story. “I, The Author, am willing to open my characters’ minds with ‘Why’s’ as they ask themselves our questions, and you ask yourself theirs.” The authorial voice pops up regularly, offering explanations for his choices, and explanations of the construct of the story as it unfolds.
And Raganato clearly enjoys playing with both the reader and the characters as he manipulates the situation. Eventually, the author of The Author appears, in his own story, in the mazed darkness to further obfuscate our already bewildered characters. It’s all in good fun. The author banters with his characters and explains the construct of the narrative, all the while philosophical questions are raised, but never answered. Here the author is god, or is an allegory for God, and like all good religions, raises more questions than answers.
The characters, inescapably drawn into the author’s trappings, seek the key to their escape, and even briefly, hold the truth of their existence in their hands. The setting is reminiscent of a Saturday matinee fantasy world, dark halls, expansive libraries, mysterious tunnels, locked sewer grates, mysterious portraits. None of it is menacing, nor is it meant to be. For the reader, The Author is a comic novel full of pratfalls, irony, and meta-humor. For the characters in The Author the story is a frustrating, and tragic adventure in the dark, a discovery of the self. And the twist, of course, is eventually the author, the great cause of their suffering, is found, isolated and typing out the story as it happens. It is then The Author reaches its inevitable conclusion, where the reader, the author, and the characters experience blur into a philosophical miasma of possibilities.

Is the Author God?

They say that authors love controlling their characters and they love nothing more than to torture them and kill them off if necessary. But readers might not know that there is a cardinal rule with writing that all authors must adhere to: writers must remain true to their characters. For characters to be real people, they can only do certain things certain ways and some things they simply cannot do, for it is “not part of their character.”
Facundo Raganato’s The Author or The Characters’ Short Living Story is a fun literary adventure which has a lot of fun with the notion of what happens when an author creates six characters in his own setting and tries to control and guide them, but ultimately lets them act as the characters they are. The Author also shows up routinely in the story, interacting with the characters, perhaps guiding, perhaps changing their direction, no one really knows. However, all the characters and the Author know there is a Reader out there following the story along and giving the characters life.
The story begins with the Author setting the scene, like sculpting a piece of art, and on a meta level talking about writing and characterization. Then the reader is introduced to the six main characters, who have generic names like Kimberly and Leo and seem unimpressive at first. They are all together in a strange place but have no memory of who they really are – other than their names – and what lives they have come from. As the story progresses, they constantly discuss if they are actually real or just fictitious creations.
As they get to know what little they know about themselves, as well as getting a little info from the Author, they must begin their quest of sorts, working together and facing nonstop conflict and obstacles like a surrounding wall of mirrors or a sewer grate locked tight which they must somehow get open. But their ultimate challenge is when they must each go their separate ways, passing through doors bearing their names, not knowing where they will be taken and if they will ever see each other again.
The Author works on many levels, stimulating the mind about writing and characters working together, but also what it means to be uncertain where the next step will lead, especially when there is a trickster Author involved, and how sometimes working together may be the only way to survive. The few typos in the book do throw the reader out of the story as the writing has a unique style to it that is enjoyable to follow. Reading what little description there is about the book, would-be readers may have some preconceived notions about what to expect from the book, but they will be well surprised as it is a unique work that they have likely not come across before.
