The Samurai Diet: The Science & Strategy of Winning the Fat Loss War, by Nate Miyaki

Can you achieve outstanding fat loss and physique enhancement results while simultaneously improving overall health and wellness?

Is there a sustainable approach that will allow you to maintain a year-round six-pack, without compromising your health, sanity, or ability to function in the real world?

Is there a functional plan that will allow a busy, working professional to look more like a fitness model and less like the average Y2K American, without having to throw away their career goals, live like a professional athlete, or have their life revolve around food?

The answer is yes. Will it be magic-pill/infomercial easy? No, but with the right strategies and practical application, it is possible.

Many bodybuilders and fat loss enthusiasts will follow extreme measures to attain a ripped physique -- unknowingly disrupting normal metabolic and hormonal functioning, and ultimately compromising long-term health.

At the same time, there are many Paleo/Low Carb eaters that seek to improve biomarkers of health, but lose out on the physique enhancing benefits of scientifically researched, modern sports nutrition principles. Despite consistent exercise and healthy eating patterns, they are unable to attain the lean, sculpted physique they desire.

The truth is that with a more informed approach, you don't have to sacrifice one goal to achieve the other.

The Samurai Diet makes use of Bruce Lee's philosophy: research your own experience, absorb what is useful, reject what is useless, and add what is essentially your own.

The Samurai Diet pulls the best principles from Paleo Nutrition, Sports Nutrition, Bodybuilding & Fitness Nutrition, the Traditional Japanese Diet, Intermittent Fasting approaches, and research from university labs and peer-reviewed research journals across the globe.

The Samurai Diet combines evolutionary theory, scientific research, and practical experience (as a natural bodybuilder, fitness model, and physique enhancement coach) to unveil a hybrid plan geared towards simultaneously achieving your two main goals: improving health AND improving appearance.

From the Back Cover
In this book you will learn:

  • The major problems with the average, Y2K American Diet.
  • What foods to eat and what foods to cut out in order to maximize fat loss, including the science behind why.
  • Why most foods marketed as "health foods" are not that great for fat loss.
  • How public policy and traditional nutritionists are influenced by major food refining industries, and why you will never optimize body composition following "standard, accepted" advice.
  • How exercise changes the way your body processes nutrients for 24-48 hours, and why the diets of active populations should be different than those of sedentary populations.
  • Why one-size-fits-all, universal diet programs or nutritional dogma don't work. Targeted recommendations need to be based off of a person's current status and goals.
  • The difference between treating sick populations with specific medical conditions and advising athletes with elite physique enhancement or performance goals.
  • Why low carb diets may be the absolute best approach for some demographics but disastrous for others.
  • The health and physique enhancement benefits and drawbacks of both dietary fat and carbohydrates.
  • Why ketosis does not automatically equal fat loss, and the major drawbacks of ketogenic dieting.
  • How extreme calorie cuts can disrupt normal metabolic and hormonal functioning, lead to huge weight rebounds, and a lifetime of yo-yo'ing.
  • Why drastically restricting carbs during periods of intense, anaerobic training can lead to a chronic catabolic environment, cortisol overdominance, muscle loss, stubborn fat, and the "Skinny-Fat" Syndrome.
  • How dietary variables can affect hormones such as testosterone, growth hormone, cortisol, and leptin.
  • The science and psychological factors involved in deciding your optimal meal frequency pattern.
  • Why food combining practices and the satiety index are just as important as the glycemic index.
  • The difference between essential nutrients and energy nutrients.
  • How BOTH low carb, healthy fat AND lower fat, good-carb based diets can be used to effectively drop body fat.
  • The science, evolutionary theory, and social factors behind why eating the majority of your calories/carbs at night can be one of the most effective and sustainable approaches for real world fat loss.
  • The problems with chronic "dieting" and why periodic cheating, feasting, over-feeding, or carb-loading can be beneficial for fat loss.
  • Learn why you must understand and use the sacrifice/reward pattern on both a daily and weekly basis.
  • The reasons we store fat BESIDES caloric excess.
  • High calorie, low satiety, nutrient poor foods vs. low calorie, high satiety, nutrient dense foods.
  • Why you should not "drink" calories.
  • Why a protein-only breakfast may be ideal for fat loss.
  • The critical importance of post-workout nutrition and what to do about it.
  • The evolutionary theory, scientific research, and practical experience supporting why eating the majority of your calories/carbs at night is the most realistic, functional, and sustainable approach.

A Solid Start for a Writer
By A VFF
"The Samurai Diet" title is misleading - this book is much more than an eating plan. It's a well written and comprehensive guide to what's current in fitness nutrition. Miyaki covers the good and bad in paleo to sports nutrition to the latest resurging diet trend, Intermittent Fasting, and does so in an engaging way, sprinkled with quotes from Bruce Lee and samurai related books. He also recommends what foods to avoid and what's ok to have as well as general nutrition advice.

What makes Miyaki different from most fitness writers I've read is he advocates a moderate approach to carb intake vs the current "all carbs are bad for you" trend. The Samurai Diet is based off what he says is a traditional Japanese diet - 3 meals with an emphasis on protein and a staggered split of moderate and light carbs such as sweet potatoes and vegetables, respectively. Giving examples of how low carb and extreme diets, while effective, can also cause issues (lethargy, depression, insomnia, etc.) he argues a moderate approach to carbs is more beneficial since that can help in exercise recovery, building muscle, and in some cases lower body fat faster than following a strictly low carb diet. But he doesn't completely dismiss low carb diets, since he thinks it's a better fit for more sedentary folks given their lower amounts of activity.

Though a relative newcomer to the fitness writing world, Miyaki's been around the block and it shows. Drawing from his time as a trainer/nutritionist and overall fitness lifestyle/education, he quotes numerous published reports and studies to back up his assertions, which is a refreshing change from other authors who write "numerous studies say..." then don't quote any of them. He also has a knack in simplifying concepts, such as an example in "Lesson #1: Exercise Cannot Make Up for a Poor Diet" where he shows how someone who eats ice cream then thinks they're burning those calories by working out harder isn't accomplishing much. He talks about how the ice cream and intense exercise can cause negative effects in the body and it's all easy to understand.

The book is broken up into sections with short chapters where he addresses different nutritional/fitness topics. The chapters run from one to several pages long, so they're a fairly quick read and it's an easy book to put down and pick back up again if you're busy.

If you're looking for this book to be your diet savior, you might be disappointed. While Miyaki does advocate the Samurai Diet for active people and a paleo type lower carb intake for people who are sedentary, he also states what works well for one person may not for someone else and a lot of this can be "learn as you go" as you figure out what your body will or won't tolerate foodwise (which is something I've learned as well from personal experience).

There are some things I'd have liked to have seen:

1. More on supplements: Miyaki says supplements aren't a fast track to a great body vs how one eats and exercises and he's right. He covers staples such as green tea, caffeine, fish oil and Branched Chain Amino Acids (BCAAs) but I was disappointed there wasn't additional supplements like magnesium or creatine, which have been used in the fitness world for years with positive feedback.

2. Personal stories from his time as a trainer/nutritionist: I think talking about lessons learned from himself or his former clients (aside from an occasional mention) would make for more relatable examples. The science snippets might be nice from a 'published authorities back up what I say' point of view, but there were times I'd glaze over them.

3. Leeway in substitute foods: In "Book II: Cut Down Your Enemy", Miyaki advocates eliminating different food groups such as dairy. While he's correct in how these groups can hinder one's progress, he doesn't cover what would be good substitutes in some case. The negative examples he uses for dairy are based on cow's milk and doesn't cover other types out there like goat's or almond milk. I discovered I had a sensitivity (bloating, etc.) years ago to regular (cow) milk but have no issues with using goat's or almond milk and I know others who are the same way.

4. Miyaki's columns have shown he has a great, if not offbeat, sense of humor. He might have been advised to keep it straight since this is his first book, but I think some dashes of humor here and there would've added more of a personal touch.

If you're a regular reader of Miyaki's columns, there's nothing here he hasn't written before but he does elaborate quite a bit and I'd still recommend buying the book. I learned some new things and think of it as a handy reference. If you're a beginner to the fitness lifestyle, this would make an excellent starting point and I've told a trainer I know to pass word of this book on to his clients. For $6 (cheaper than most meals) this book is a steal.

It's been working
By Mark S. Schoon
I'm 57, haven't been very active for a couple of years, had gotten very out of shape and a bit overweight (6'1", 210lbs). That was about 6 weeks ago. I've started becoming much more active doing something almost every day. Walking briskly, strength training 3-4 times a week, swimming, some cycling, all of which has helped, but what's made the biggest difference is following the advice in this book. I like that it's well researched, that at the end of the book he's not trying to sell his special supplement or exercise equipment or whatever. In fact he advocates taking it all with some skepticism and doing some experimenting for what works in your own circumstance.

The biggest lesson I've learned is how important food choice is and how that impacts everything that follows. I dropped gluten, dairy, and virtually all processed foods, and have been scaling back on grains. This morning, I was 192, I sleep better and I feel great. Best of all I'm not on a diet, but have discovered a new understanding of how to eat to meet my goals that will carry me through in the long run. It's literally changed my life.

Excellent resource
By BPM
This is a very good book on how 'physique athletes' diet to get very lean, delivered in a what I'd imagine the author would agree is a gimmicky but entertaining manner. The whole samurai angle is, let's be honest, pretty silly. I promise that samurai were not particularly concerned about maintaining a single digit body fat level. It does add a lot of entertainment value to what is very clear, straightforward and effective information. As someone who's been eating Paleo/Primal for many years, but never got super lean, this was exactly the information I needed. Some folks have mentioned that they would like meal plans but it's made clear in the book that you need to figure out your own meal plans- the whole point is your diet is deeply dependent on your current body composition, activity levels and so on. I do disagree with him when he says that food scales are overkill- my little $20 scale really helped me to understand what a serving of 50 grams of protein looks like, for example (more chicken breast than you may think). I don't use it much any more but starting out it was super useful.

I give 4 stars instead of 5 only because probably half of the book is italicized copy and paste text from dozens of studies. I would bet that the vast majority of people reading this book don't need to read 5 pages of a study's result in detail concerning lipid levels and hormone measurements- we just want a 2 or 3 sentence summary of the results, and throw the rest in an appendix for the technically inclined. Other than that it's a great book and highly recommended.

This fascinating account of an unusual research project challenges many assumptions about how young children learn and how best to teach them. In particular it turns upside-down the commonly held belief that professionals know better than parents how to educate and bring up children; and it throws doubt on the theory that working-class children underachieve at school because of a language deficit at home. The second edition of this bestselling text includes a new introduction by Judy Dunn.

The second edition of this best-selling text includes a new introduction by Judy Dunn and offers the reader a fascinating account of an unusual research project that challenges many assumptions about how young children learn and how best to teach them. In particular it turns upside-down the commonly held belief that professionals know better than parents how to educate and bring up children; and it throws doubt on the theory that working-class children underachieve at school because of a language deficit at home. The authors' evidence is the children's own conversations which are quoted extensively and are delightful. Their account raises important issues about nursery schools and how they affect some children; and it persuades us, above all, to value parenting more highly, and to have fresh respect for the intellectual capabilities of young minds. This book will appeal to a wide readership, including early years professionals, developmental psychologists, and the parents of young children.

Young Children Learning
By Allegro1066
This is a remarkable book - a must read for every parent, parent-to-be, and teacher! I read it shortly after its publication, and was so impressed that I called and also spoke with Barbara Tizard, its British author and educational researcher. I also gave individual copies to the members of the board of our local school district, who were debating whether to open a program for three-year-olds in our middle-to-upper class neighborhood.

To compare the intellectual effectiveness of school and home, respectively, of preschoolers in two-parent families on public assistance, Dr. Tizard wired the preschoolers with tiny microphones and followed them into the two environments. As I remember, the experiment was rather lengthy - perhaps several months long.

The outcomes were stunning - even to the researchers, as I recall; across the board the children experienced dramatically more teachable moments and had more intellectual leaps in their homes than they did at school. Because instant responses by parents were able to satisfy immediately the questions children asked, the children were able to grasp a concept at the exact time they exhibited curiosity about it. If my memory serves me correctly, the individual interactions at school between the child and the teacher were at a bare minimum, and mainly were limited to comments such as, " Johnny, please give the glue back to Susie," or "Tell Jenny to quit kicking me", rather than intellectually speculating about why something floats or sinks.

On the other hand, even the poor home offered a ripe environment for the opportunity of satisfying curiosity. After arriving at home after a morning at preschool, a little girl, while eating her lunch, asked her mother why the roof was slanted. The recorder picked up the mother's reply and subsequent discussion (snow, gravity, etc.) as both mother and child pondered this profound scientific concept.

Fascinating!

Crap. This essentially comes with the instructions in the Raspberry Pi. You're better off spending your money on the official guidebook from the creator of Raspberry Pi

Don't buy this unless you need emergency toilet paper.

I would give this book less than one star if it were possible. The editing is horrible, and the book is so short it isn't worth buying. Get the User Guide by Eben Upton instead.

An introduction to the Raspberry Pi 2, not a user guide.
By William P.
This book is more of an introduction to the Raspberry Pi 2, rather a user guide. It only has 45 pages and does contain some interesting information, but I was expecting more.

Half in Love: Surviving the Legacy of Suicide, by Linda Gray Sexton

After the agony of witnessing her mother's multiple—and ultimately successful—suicide attempts, Linda Gray Sexton, daughter of the acclaimed poet Anne Sexton, struggles with an engulfing undertow of depression. Here, with powerful, unsparing prose, Sexton conveys her urgent need to escape the legacy of suicide that consumed her family—a topic rarely explored, even today, in such poignant depth.

Linda Gray Sexton tries multiple times to kill herself—even though as a daughter, sister, wife, and most importantly, a mother, she knows the pain her act would cause. But unlike her mother's story, Linda’s is ultimately one of triumph. Through the help of family, therapy, and medicine, she confronts deep-seated issues and curbs the haunting cycle of suicide she once seemed destined to inherit.

From Booklist
“Half in love with easeful death” is how poet John Keats described his dreamy sense that death would be a welcome release. Linda Gray Sexton, daughter of Anne Sexton, should have been immunized against suicide by the pain of losing her mother, who took her own life at the height of her fame as one of the prime movers in the confessional poetry movement. But in midlife, as her own writing career seemed stalled and her marriage more distant than satisfying, Sexton found herself hounded by the same demons that had destroyed her mother. She writes of three suicide attempts in grim and detailed prose, but at the end she describes a newly settled and happier life with the demons held at bay. The rather rushed ending feels less settled than Sexton probably intended, but overall this is a welcome personal look at the specter that haunts many families, in which a parent’s suicide can threaten the mental health of descendants. --Patricia Monaghan

Review
Praise for Half in Love

"A clear and in-depth portrait of what it is like to attempt to take one’s own life and the ghastly legacy such an action leaves the bereaved family. For anyone who wishes to understand what drives a person to kill himself or herself, Half in Love brings a deeper understanding of the illness than anything short of feeling the urge to commit suicide oneself." —American Psychological Association Review of Books

"A welcome personal look at the specter that haunts many families, in which a parent’s suicide can threaten the mental health of descendants." —Booklist

“In a country where someone commits suicide every seventeen minutes, where bipolar disorder is rampant and poorly understood, Linda Sexton’s beautiful book is a cry for health and sanity. It will bring hope and understanding because it explains the way suicide blights families from generation to generation.” —Erica Jong, author of Fear of Flying

“In her new memoir, Linda Sexton completes the circle opened up with her stunning memoir, Searching for Mercy Street—but this time, the woman whose torment she explores is not her mother, but herself, and where her mother’s story ended with despair, hers is one of survival. With brutal honesty and total lack of self-pity or sentimentality, Linda Sexton has dared to explore a subject more taboo than almost any other: not only suicide, but what comes after, for its survivors. This is a book that will speak to anyone touched by the suicide of someone we knew or loved—as so many of us have been.” —Joyce Maynard, author of At Home in the World and To Die For

“Half in Love is a gripping account of the legacy left by a mother’s suicide and an eloquent testament to a daughter’s struggle to wrench herself free of the damage left in the wake of turmoil. Linda Sexton’s determination to forge an identity independent of suicide and destruction is powerful; her book is a vivid and inspiring story of living through despair and coming out the stronger for it.” —Kay Redfield Jamison, author of An Unquiet Mind, and Professor of Psychiatry, John Hopkins School of Medicine

“Linda Sexton is one hell of a brave writer. In her memoir, she takes us on a harrowing journey, to the edge of death and then beyond, to a new, safe place. She’s now able to tell her story about the entanglement with her mother’s legacy—‘half in love with easeful death.’ It’s a story that will reach deep into many readers’ hearts. She makes the telling of this tale an act of grace, of art, of redemption.” —Ellen Sussman, author of On a Night Like This and the upcoming French Lessons

“This is an exquisitely crafted story that needs to be told: how depression and suicide can be passed down through the generations. The most loving, committed mother can suffer such intense pain that all reason is blacked out and death seems the only answer. Linda Sexton is unsparing in her honesty and unfailing in her eloquence as she takes us from the descent to hell to the miracle of recovery. After a siege of courting death, she comes to fall wholly in love with life.” —Sara Davidson, author of Leap! and Loose Change

“Once again, Sexton has pulled off something truly remarkable—in prose that is both graceful and raw she crafts powerful scenes that vibrate with authenticity. I cannot recall a more riveting description of a nearly lethal suicide attempt. The suspense leaps off the pages, pages which the reader is now turning furiously. Also powerful is her deep understanding of how suicide permanently impacts the family through multiple generations and her descriptions of self-stigmatization, which, by the way, belong in mental health curricula.” —Dr. Frederick K. Goodwin, MD, Professor of Psychiatry, George Washington University, Former Director of the National Institute of Mental Health

“Half in Love is a testament to the potentially mortal wounds that suicide inflicts upon the living. Linda Gray Sexton has transformed her emotional suffering into a memoir of stunning intimacy. Wise, insightful, and unflinchingly honest, Sexton mines the depths of the darkest despair and ultimately her own salvation. This is a masterful work, beautifully written, by a brave soul of remarkable talent.” —James Brown, author of The Los Angeles Diaries and This River

Praise for Searching for Mercy Street

“Powerful and affecting . . . a candid, often painful, depiction of a daughter’s struggles to come to terms with her powerful and emotionally troubled mother. Sexton writes with compelling urgency and candor and has not tried to gloss over the difficulties of their relationship or resolve the ambivalence of her own emotions. Rather, she has set all these conflicts down on paper, leaving us with a disturbing portrait or a mercurial, impossible, and magnetic woman.” —Michiko Kakutani, The New York Times

“A courageous journey into the dark terrain of remembering, forgiving and healing through telling—a trait that is her birthright.” —People

“One never doubts that Linda Gray Sexton has told us the truth . . . Her writing is at its best: lean, quick, tightly conceived . . . The book almost reeks of authenticity. Searching for Mercy Street is never less than fascinating.” —The New York Times Book Review

“This memoir has an urgency about it and it is to Sexton’s credit as an honest and largely unself-serving narrator that throughout she has chosen to forgo the primitive gratification of scrawling over the picture of her childish mother-worship with fat black crayon; instead she continues to add strokes of color and lightness to an ever-darkening portrait. By the book’s end she has made her way valiantly back to her mother, passing through the portals of rage and despair before she glimpses the possibility of separating out Anne Sexton’s perverse influence from her legacy of delight in words and experience . . . Searching for Mercy Street is suffused with a complicated kind of love.” —Daphne Merkin, The New Yorker

“In this spectacular story of a glamorous, talented and beautiful family veering toward disaster, Linda Sexton has broken the code of silence which often surrounds the American home. In her powerful and graceful prose, honed in four novels of her own, she has quietly and lovingly told the story of her mother and the family she loved both too much and too little. Any mother or daughter, any child of an alcoholic parent, anyone who has lived with the all-consuming obsession of a writer with their work, will recognize themselves in this ravishing portrait.” —Susan Cheever

“In this deft, beautiful memoir, Sexton covers difficult family territory with unique grace.” —New York Daily News

“Sexton has written about intense personal conflicts, evoked strong emotion, and stayed true to it. The saga of this daughter and her mother is inherently fascinating.” —Chicago Tribune

“One of the most illuminating things here is that careful, industrious Linda—who, as she grows older, bravely fights off her own depressions, headaches, even suicidal thoughts, idolizing ‘normalcy’, health, and domestic responsibility—seems a far better writer than her mom.” —Carolyn See, The Washington Post Book World

“Linda Gray Sexton’s exploration is so smart, so well-written, moving, and generous that it transcends the typecasting that could easily have become a trap . . . Written with grace, precision and, most important, love.” —Los Angeles Times Book Review

“Heroic.” —New York Newsday

“This cathartic and anguish-filled book spares no details of the mother’s selfish and difficult personality or her intense and fortifying love.” —Library Journal

“In deceptively fluid prose, Linda explores her complex relationship to her mother and strips raw the nerves of a troubled family.” —Kirkus (starred review)

I read this as part of a course on the intergenerational transmission of trauma. It was very good; I thought the author's linkage of her own experiences to those of her mother, and her consistent attention to the legacy she inherited, was really beautifully executed and moving. At times, I admit to becoming a little frustrated with her as I read, because I identified with others in the book, too--with her ex-husband and children, especially--and did not always feel that their perspectives were fully considered. At the same time, what she lived through and experienced was traumatic, and I admire that she allowed herself to show many vulnerable parts of herself and painful experiences in this memoir. It was well-written and easy to read, though be aware there are a few passages at the beginning that may be difficult to read as they are somewhat graphic. Very, very good book.

A Haunted Life
By C. Hutton
Having a poet-genius for a parent would be difficult for many children. Having an abusive, self-centered parent would be destructive for most children. Having Anne Sexton as your mother would be the worst of both worlds for Linda Gray Sexton.

"Half In Love" is the conclusion of a trilogy of works about the Sexton Family. Starting with Diana Middlebrook's biography of Anne Sexton in 1991, Linda Gray Sexton attempted to understand herself by cooperating with the writer of her mother's life. Then she published her own memoir of life with her alcoholic and mentally-ill mother in 1994 ("Searching For Mercy Street"), twenty years after her mother's suicide. Now, in 2010, she has written a second memoir, "Half In Love," about the culminative effects upon her adult life from her twenty-one years with Ann Sexton as her mother.

Linda Gray Sexton writes of her own life-and-death struggles with suicidal depression, of the loss of family and friends who were exhausted dealing with her pain and of her own survival in the end. The writing is compelling but the story is very intense. It is eerie to read of her drive to be a writer (like her mother), to cycle through therapy and medications (like her mother), and to attempt suicide (like her mother). Unlike her mother, she has lived longer than her. Survival can be its own victory.

Important Book
By Amira
Linda Sexton's memoir of mental illness and suicide attempts will clearly not be everyone's cup of tea. However, that does not mean it is not an important and compellingly told story. Linda bravely does not flinch from telling readers about every feeling and action even though it sometimes makes her an unsympathetic figure. She's not perfect, just a human being with an extremely difficult childhood and a clearly hereditary bipolar tendency. Reading this book will let readers know what mental illness is like warts and all. It is entirely impossible to really "get" mental illness from the outside in. This book does a stunning job of sharing what living through mental illness is like from the inside out. I would reccomend it to anyone who is involved with a loved one going through these issues and/or professionals who work with patients with mental illness. I can think of no more powerful way of understanding what living with mental illness is like.

Linda is a great writer and a gutsy lady.

2016 BMA Awards: Highly Commended, Basic & Clinical Sciences

"The 13th edition of Guyton and Hall Textbook of Medical Physiology continues this bestselling title's long tradition as the world's foremost medical physiology textbook. Unlike other textbooks on this topic, this clear and comprehensive guide has a consistent, single-author voice and focuses on the content most relevant to clinical and pre-clinical students. The detailed but lucid text is complemented by didactic illustrations that summarize key concepts in physiology and pathophysiology." -Doody’s Review Service

Up to date modern physiology :D
    By Thomas
This is a great physiology textbook! I'm a little over 100 pages in and thought I would leave my thoughts and findings so far. The full online version of the book and resources are included for free! Sixteen video animations, multiple choice questions on each unit of the book, and 25 enhanced images where you can quickly hide the labels, quiz yourself, and then click to see the correct label are all part of the online version resources. There are no quizzes or questions at the end of each unit in the physical print edition (I think the Guyton and Hall Physiology Review 3e is geared toward this aspect). The general layout of the textbook is two columns of text per page with many figures and tables interwoven. The font of the text is clear and easy to read. The text guides you through the figures and explains them well as it is teaching the subject making for a far better learning experience than others where they just have a description underneath the figure (in this textbook there is also a very brief description under the figure but mainly is described in the main part as you are reading). There are mini bibliographies at the end of each unit allowing you to know where you might start to further dive into that topic and read some of the current research papers. Modern research and findings have been seamlessly incorporated. An index is included at the back of this book, but there is no glossary.

Here is the general outline (15 units broken down into 85 chapters):
Unit 1 - Introduction to Physiology: The Cell and General Physiology
Unit 2 - Membrane Physiology, Nerve, and Muscle
    Unit 3 - The Heart
    Unit 4 - The Circulation
Unit 5 - The Body Fluids and Kidneys
Unit 6 - Blood Cells, Immunity, and Blood Coagulation
    Unit 7 - Respiration
Unit 8 - Aviation, Space, and Deep-Sea Diving Physiology
Unit 9 - The Nervous System: A. General Principles and Sensory Physiology
Unit 10 - The Nervous System: B. The Special Senses
Unit 11 - The Nervous System: C. Motor and Integrative Neurophysiology
    Unit 12 - Gastrointestinal Physiology
Unit 13 - Metabolism and Temperature Regulation
Unit 14 - Endocrinology and Reproduction
    Unit 15 - Sports Physiology

Without physiology there is no medicine
    By Deborah J. Burns, D.V.M.
Without an intimate knowledge of all aspects of physiology, disease mechanisms can never be fully understood and pharmacology becomes rote memorization, rather than the art of fine tuning the target system back to its normal physiologic state. Without physiology there is no medicine.
Guyton's textbook is an extremely important tool in understanding physiology.

    Outstanding
    By J.D.
I felt obligated to quickly write a review about this medical physiology text because it has saved me countless hours of study time. I am a first year graduate student studying acute care nurse practitioner and our required textbook (McCance) is about as fun to read as a dictionary. Guyton and Hall is concise and provides in-depth up-to-date information beyond the scope of my current studies. If you are drinking from an information firehose, this book will provide all your basic medical physiology needs.

Optimum Drive ─ Why should you just be good when you can be great?

Attaining peak performance: Optimum Drive is a motivational book that uses top level race car driving as a metaphor for peak performance. As a professional racing driver himself as well a driving coach for over 20 years, the author Paul F. Gerrard has penned his unique perspective on what causes people to stagnate with the idea of being merely good, when each of us has the potential to be great. Gerrard believes that peak performance is within our grasp. He lays out his step-by-step process for attaining peak performance with detailed nuance threaded throughout. If you have ever been curious about maximizing your own ultimate potential, Optimum Drive is for you!

Mental toughness: Greatness is as hard to quantify as it is to achieve…probably not a coincidence. In this debut book, Optimum Drive, professional driver Gerrard helps you understand the mental toughness that it takes to reach that greatness. He starts off by taking you onto the track as he explores what driving at 200 mph can teach us about who we are. Using his experiences from behind the wheel at death-defying speeds, Gerrard breaks down the psychology of driving, what it takes, and how we can use it to achieve greatness in life.

Flow psychology and staying in the zone: The key to the mental toughness that Gerrard believes it takes to achieve peak performance is the nirvana-like sensation of flow psychology or being in the zone. Flow psychology, or being in the zone, is a mental state in which one who is performing an activity is fully immersed in a feeling of energized focus, full involvement, and joy. It is through flow psychology that Gerrard introduces a blend of holistic mindset combined with a competitive edge, which is essential to successful professional driving. This mix of guts, tenacity and endurance is the foundation of Gerrard’s philosophy for attaining greatness.

Natural vs. earned talent; After flow psychology, you will learn about natural vs earned talent and how the way we drive is representative of who we are. From braking, cornering and accelerating to anticipation vs. reaction, refining a process that defines our greatness in or out of the car.

    Review
"Have you tried driving an automobile at the limit of performance on a track... naked?

Paul Gerrard's comprehensive principles overlay a method of drilling down to the truth of your skill set. You get in the car, take your fire suit off, and get blasted by a pressure washer. Sure this sounds painful, but you're washing in the honesty of driver skills assessment.

In doing so you grow―performing at a higher level―going beyond the plateau that you never realized you were stuck on.

Reading Paul's book is an insightful and welcomed experience. Optimum Drive stands apart from the crowd of how-to-drive-a-race-car publications."

    - Rob Schermerhorn, Delta Vee Motorsports LLC

“Paul's unique way of describing the "art" of driving is what's so appealing to me. I highly recommend this book for the novice driver as well as the experienced professional!"

    - Micheal Castiglione, Design Manager, KIA Design Center America

“As an aspiring racer and lifetime student of performance driving, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed and benefited from Optimum Drive. Paul’s writing is full of insights -- both into the psychology of competitive driving – and drive itself - accompanied with some very powerful and useable techniques. The way he brings to life the role of tires and the concept of ‘Zerosteer’ improved my lap times. From his decades of experience, this book delivers on its promise to make you smarter, better and faster.”

― Chris Cappy, President, Pilot Consulting Corporation

“Optimum Drive is a racers guide for anyone trying to get to the top tiers of professional motor racing. As a professional driving coach Paul has seen a wide range of driver issues and understands the complexity of modern motorsports and its technological components. Paul explains the areas a driver must focus his efforts on to master his craft.”

    - D. Bruce Reichel, Racer and Career Driving Trainer, Driving SME

“I have been involved in high performance driving, including club racing, at all amateur levels for twenty-five years. No professional I have been exposed to in numerous driving and racing schools over the years has articulated, demonstrated and taught high-performance driving and race-craft knowledge and skills better than Paul Gerrard.”

Gary Church President & CEO, Aviation Management Associates, Inc.

"If you know all about threshold braking, late apexes, and trolling for sponsors, but you’re still not achieving racing success, Paul Gerrard’s new book might be able to help. In Optimum Drive, Gerrard covers these topics, but he also focuses on the mental side of racing―how to develop the mindset that’s essential for greatness. We all need the right attitude to make the most of our inherent skills."

    Csaba Csere
    Editor-in-Chief, Car and Driver
    1993-2008

"The mental side of driving is so important and easily ignored, be it ego, laziness or purely lack of understanding of its true power for success. There are reasons we progress and perform differently on any given day and Pauls book brings this all into perspective and written in such away that it can be utilized for us to be the best we can be, more often, and learn at a much higher rate. Through our many conversations I know Pauls passion and knowledge for the art of driving to be second to none and he has been able to put this gift into written words so that even the most experienced of drivers can gain tools to reach a higher and more consistent level. As for the person just embarking on their performance driving journey what a fantastic insight to take with you and help you rise through the many levels. A glovebox book for reference along the way and one I would love any student I teach to read from beginning to end."

Paul Charsley Formula 1 Blog Analyst, driver coach, manager and professional racing driver

"With an array of motorsports driving books on the shelf it's wonderful to see a new and exciting approach by delving deeper inside the all important mental game. Paul has drawn on his vast experience of driving, coaching and living racing to put together a map that guides you through the mental mine field that is competitive racing. You’ll quickly learn how driving transcends into any challenge in life, sports or business."

    - Nick Harvey, Xfinity Competition Manager, Chip Ganassi Racing

    Optimum reading
    By Rick B.
I have finished the book, Amazon just now allowed me to do a review. I gave it five stars because I can't give it six. Normally you read for entertainment, I bought this for entertainment. When I started reading it I seriously wish I had listened to Paul more when he lived here. This book is education , It takes studying. Reading chapters over and over to make sure they sink in. Paul you have done a great job with this. I can apply quite a bit of it to the motorcycle world where I am, "the mediocre teacher" but this book will make me better. At both riding and teaching.
    Maybe driving too.
