The Vanishing American Adult: Our Coming-of-Age Crisis--and How to Rebuild a Culture of Self-Reliance, by Ben Sasse

America's youth are in crisis. Raised by well-meaning but overprotective parents and coddled by well-meaning but misbegotten government programs, they are ill-equipped to survive in our highly-competitive global economy.

Many of the coming-of-age rituals that have defined the American experience since the Founding: learning the value of working with your hands, leaving home to start a family, becoming economically self-reliant--are being delayed or skipped altogether. The statistics are daunting: 30% of college students drop out after the first year, and only 4 in 10 graduate. One in three 18-to-34 year-olds live with their parents.

From these disparate phenomena: Nebraska Senator Ben Sasse who as president of a Midwestern college observed the trials of this generation up close, sees an existential threat to the American way of life.

In The Vanishing American Adult, Sasse diagnoses the causes of a generation that can't grow up and offers a path for raising children to become active and engaged citizens. He identifies core formative experiences that all young people should pursue: hard work to appreciate the benefits of labor, travel to understand deprivation and want, the power of reading, the importance of nurturing your body--and explains how parents can encourage them.

Our democracy depends on responsible, contributing adults to function properly--without them America falls prey to populist demagogues. A call to arms, The Vanishing American Adult will ignite a much-needed debate about the link between the way we're raising our children and the future of our country.

Review

"Deeply thoughtful, delightfully personal, and bravely ecumenical in scope, Sasse’s guide for stemming the tide of delayed responsibility showcases what is both practical and possible." ―Booklist

“Heartfelt advice … an earnest critique of American youth.” ―Kirkus Reviews

"I know Ben Sasse as one of the most important emerging voices in our national dialogue―plain-spoken, brilliant, and unafraid to speak his mind. Whether we agree or disagree, when he speaks―I'm listening. And when he writes, I'm definitely reading." ―U.S. Senator Cory Booker

"Couple years ago, somebody told me a senator from Nebraska was tweeting about the essential business of castrating bulls. I didn't know who Ben Sasse was, but I was intrigued his use of social media. I've since met him, and I like him. If you read this book, you will too. It's excellent. In particular, the "Lessons from the Ranch" section should be required reading for every parent, every child, and every elected official in America. This really is a book for everyone―well, except the bulls." ―Mike Rowe, Creator and Host of Dirty Jobs

"Ben Sasse is a thoughtful father, historian and Senator. And he has written a non-political book about one of the most important policy topics of the day―how to raise self-reliant and adventurous children. Any parent will read this alternating between "damn right" and guilt pangs. The book is practical, helpful and conversational. I wish it had been written 20 years ago!" ―U.S. Senator Tim Kaine

"Historian, dad, and former college president Ben Sasse has nailed it: we're failing our kids. Each generation must mold the next into solid citizens at home, at work, and in the city square. This book is a well-timed rebuke and a time-tested recipe―just what America needs." ―U.S. Senator Marco Rubio

"Being an adolescent myself, this book shed some light on my situation and I'm glad my wife was kind enough to read it to me. In all seriousness, even though my alter ego doesn't read, I'm a dad and I do. Ben is dead on point on every page and this book should become required reading for every parent. Bravo Ben!! (P.S. Please send another copy because I've got pudding on this one.?)" ―Dan Whitney, A.K.A., Larry the Cable Guy

"Y'all, a senator wrote an interesting book! That's basically a miracle. Somewhere between "the kids are all right" and "get off my lawn" exists Ben Sasse's The Vanishing American Adult, and it's a fascinating place to be. At a time when adolescence has become a destination, rather than a journey, Sasse asks us to wrestle with remaking it. Let’s get kids moving again through the hard work of becoming grown-ups. Avoiding the process could be especially perilous for a nation founded by a bunch of young people with an audacious idea and the will to fight for it, in the hopes that generations to come would be gritty enough do the same." ―Mary Katharine Ham, CNN

"As we struggle to overcome the spiritual decay of the digital age, it's incredibly heartening that at least one man in Washington gets it and wants to help." ―Mollie Z. Hemingway, Senior Editor, The Federalist

“Ben Sasse is a good Senator, a great thinker and an even better writer. His book tells the truth about what truly ails America. It’s not partisan politics. It’s us – our families, and our loss of confidence in the future. He argues effectively that our national destiny depends less on what happens in Washington and more on what we do at home. But take heart – Sasseoffers powerful solutions, both personal and universal, that will restore our faith in the future and our responsibilities to each other as parents, neighbors, and citizens of the greatest country on earth.” ―Dr. Frank Luntz, CBS News & Fox News Analyst

“Ben Sasse’s book is not an angry diatribe against the younger generation. Nor is it a call to return to an idyllic vision of days gone by. Rather, it’s a practical, insightful call to all Americans to reject passivity, embrace initiative, and boldly approach the future with purpose and vision.” ―Jim Daly, President, Focus on the Family

About the Author
U.S. Senator Ben Sasse is a fifth-generation Nebraskan. The son of a football and wrestling coach, he attended public school in Fremont, Neb., and spent his summers working soybean and corn fields. He was recruited to wrestle at Harvard before attending Oxford and later earning a Ph.D. in American history from Yale. Prior to the Senate, Sasse spent five years as president of Midland University back in his hometown. As perhaps the only commuting family in the U.S. Senate, Ben and his wife, Melissa, live in Nebraska but are homeschooling their three children as they commute weekly back and forth to Washington, DC.

An accidental politician, Sasse doesn't tell you how he will save you. Rather, how to save yourself - and your kids
By Graham H. Seibert
Ben Sasse is not a typical politician, and he says explicitly that this is not a policy book. He is not telling you how he is going to take care of you. There is no plan to save the world. He describes the many, many ills of our education system with the knowledgeable perspective of the son and husband of teachers - and tells you he is home schooling his children.

This book consists of his observations on how to raise successful children. He cites other authors who have given the issue some thought. These include Rousseau and John Dewey, with whom he often disagrees, and Diane Ravitch and John Gatto writing about public schools. He is an educated man who wants the best for his children.

Sasse is a US Senator. He envisions that the problems he identifies must be resolved within the polity that is the United States. Hirschmann wrote in 1970 that there are three choices when one is confronted with a difficult problem: Exit, Voice, and Loyalty. Sasse addresses the second of them – he assumes the problems are fixable. Unlike most politicians, he sees that the people must be an active part of the solution. It cannot be imposed from above.

Sociologists identify many markers associated with becoming an adult. Eight big ones are:
1. Moving from parents’ home
2. Leaving school for the final time
3. Getting a full-time job
4. Reaching economic self-sufficiency
5. Loss of virginity
6. Getting married
7. Having children
8. Establishing an independent household

These passages provide structure to life. They used to happen systematically, and in a somewhat predictable order. For millennials (1980-95, per Sasse) and Gen Z this is no longer the case. As President of Midland University Sasse noted an unwillingness to engage in and to finish jobs, an unwillingness to think things through, and an unwillingness to grapple with things as an adult.

Unless we can turn these trends around, there is nothing that can be done at a policy level to restore the country. Sasse's book is primarily addressed to parents: how to raise children to become real adults.

His book (outline below) is divided into two parts: identifying the problem and suggesting things that individuals can do to address it within their own families.

Introduction: My Kids “Need” Air Conditioning
Part I Our Passivity Problem
One: Stranded in Neverland Two:
From Little Citizens to Baby Einsteins
Three: More School Isn’t Enough
Part II An Active Program
Four: Flee Age Segregation
Five: Embrace Work Pain
Six: Consume Less
Seven: Travel to See
Eight: Build a Bookshelf
Nine: Make America an Idea Again
Postscript: Why This Wasn’t a Policy Book

Sasse is uniquely well prepared to write on these themes. Son of a churchgoing high school wrestling coach, fourth generation in the small town of Fremont, Nebraska, he worked on farms as a kid. His drive and intellect powered him through five academic degrees, including Harvard and Yale, a career in consulting and (at age 37) a university presidency. He married a fellow Christian and has two teenage daughters and a kindergarten aged son.

This is an outstanding book. My extensive reading notes appear as comments.

A fresh perspective on a longstanding problem
By Ryan Freed
This book is a personal, family-oriented guide to the socio-political issues that a book like Juggernaut: Why the System Crushes the Only People Who Can Save It handles on the macro scale. It is a voice of reason and common sense in a time of alternative facts and fake news. It is a reminder of what it is to be human in an increasingly post-human world.

The argument is simple: Various cultural forces have altered our institutions so that we no longer educate our young. The phase of adolescence which had been a transitional phase is now the permanent goal, and most do not escape. Most high school grads have not worked a job at all. The norm is for college grads to go back and live with their parents. Video games occupy the attention of most young adults. Marriage and family is put off until one’s thirties if ever.

Sasse doesn't spend much time discussing the origins of this epidemic. He jumps right into the solution, which amounts to character building. There are five main pillars to this character building, based on the Sasses’ own parental program:

1. Overcome peer culture
2. Work hard
3. Resist consumption
4. Travel to experience the difference between need and want
5. Become truly literate

It's astonishing that these principles even have to be mentioned. But they do. Thankfully they do not read like tired cliches, but rather clarion calls to a more virtuous life and education.

In addition to Juggernaut, I would recommend Out of the Ashes: Rebuilding American Culture as well as The Road to Character as complementary reads.

Ben Sasse is one of a few new politicians who have offered a fresh perspective on our longstanding problems. We can only hope that the muck and mire of Washington doesn't defeat him the way it has so many other bright stars to arrive there of late.

The best I have read about being a parent at this ...
By Matthew R Geiger
This is not a political book. It's a way to rethink how we raise our kids and what is important in their upbringing. I thought this book was really well done. Made me think about what I do well and what I can amend about how I raise my kids. At times, helped me reminisce about how I was brought up too. The best I have read about being a parent at this time in history.

My only friend is darkness Psalm 88:18 CEB
By Bernie
The basic story is that Albania sends a plane with another country's markings to bomb the U.S. and we retaliate. However this is not a pacifist (don't build bombs book). This is not a sci-fi book. It could be a speculative fiction or just speculative.

The story begins after the war is completed and radiation is now covering the world. Australia is the last place to be covered. You read how different people are about to meat their end, some with hope, others with reckless abandon. Still there are those like the US sub commander Dwight Towers is loyal to his country to the end by not allowing U.S. property in the end to fall into the hands of the Aussies.

The book was written in the Cold War Era environment. So many people think that it is about countries and war; others think this story is some anti war story. The reality is that it is a study of people meeting a sure end and how they react. Other readers will balk at the actions of the people in this story; yet when they meet the same situation we will see how realistic the characters are. Still others will balk at the predictability of the characters. Still this is how many people get over a crisis by being predictable. It is these characteristics that make this novel timeless. Someone else must think so or they would not have made an updated version for our not too distant future.

The unwinnable war
By Amazon Customer
There are people on our planet who firmly believe that a nuclear war is winnable. It isn't.

"On the Beach" is a must read for anybody who thinks that way because Neville Shute foresaw the minutiae of the relentless spread of nuclear fall-out which gradually would engulf the planet. The realization by the book's main characters that there is no way out is chilling and has the effect of turning all the values we hold dear on their head.

Shute is a story teller par excellence and he excels in relating his story in incredible detail which shows through in scenes like the one where they sail into a ruined New York harbor trying to track down what they think is an amateur radio operator trying to send out a distress call. The detail makes it compelling. It is unputdownable! That Will Do Nicely

From Publishers Weekly
All the things that children loved about A Light in the Attic and Where the Sidewalk Ends can be found in abundance in this eclectic volume, Silverstein's first book of poetry in 20 years. By turns cheeky and clever and often darkly subversive, the poems are vintage Silverstein, presented in a black-and-white format that duplicates his earlier books. Like Roald Dahl, Silverstein's cartoons and poems are humorously seditious, often giving voice to a child's desire to be empowered or to retaliate for perceived injustice: one child character wields a "Remote-a-Dad" that will instantly control his father, and another dreams of his teachers becoming his students so that when they talk or laugh in class, he can "pinch 'em 'til they [cry]." The poems focus on the unexpected-a piglet receives a "people-back ride" and Medusa's snake-hair argues about whether to be coifed in cornrows or bangs. Sometimes the art traffics in gross-out, as when William Tell gets an arrow through his forehead or a cartoon character sticks carrots in his sockets because he's heard that carrots are good for his eyes. Although some parents and teachers may cringe at such touches, Silverstein's anti-establishment humor percolates as he lampoons conventions (the stork not only brings babies but "comes and gets the older folks/ When it's their time to go"), or discards decorum (a small gardener zips up his pants after watering the plants "that way"). No matter that the author's rhythms and rhymes can be sloppy, or that his annoying insistence on leavin' off the endin' to his ING's seems artificially folksy, Silverstein's ability to see the world from, as he says, "a different angle" will undoubtedly earn this book a wide audience. All ages.

From School Library Journal
Grade 3 Up?Fifteen years after A Light in the Attic (1981) and 22 years after Where the Sidewalk Ends (1974, both HarperCollins), Silverstein, whose poetry has achieved cultlike popularity, offers readers another collection. While bodily functions seem to be the source of humor in more poems than in the earlier titles, and while there are fewer wonderful images here, the child appeal is as strong as ever. Once again, Silverstein's pen-and-ink drawings are the perfect accompaniment to the poems, always extending and often explaining the words. The book abounds in energetic wordplay ("I saw an ol' gnome/Take a gknock at a gnat/Who was gnibbling the gnose of his gnu") and childlike silliness ("I only ate one drumstick/At the picnic dance this summer...But everybody's mad at me,/Especially the drummer"). Silverstein writes wonderful nonsense verse, but he has used rhyme and rhythm to greater effect in the past. There is much to love in Falling Up, but it has its ups and downs.?Kathleen Whalin, Greenwich Country Day School, CT

From Kirkus Reviews
Well, finally. In this long-overdue follow-up to A Light In The Attic (1981), Silverstein once again displays the talent for wordplay and idea-play that keeps his poetry evergreen. In bumptious verse that seldom runs more than three or four stanzas, he introduces a gallery of daffy characters, including the Terrible Toy-Eating Tookle, a hamburger named James, blissfully oblivious Headphone Harold, and the so-attractive folk attending the ``Rotten Convention''--``Mr. Mud and the Creepin' Crud/And the Drooler and Belchin' Bob,'' to name but a few. The humor has become more alimentary with the years, but the lively, deceptively simple art hasn't changed a bit. Its puzzled-looking young people (with an occasional monster or grimacing grown-up thrown in) provide visual punchlines and make silly situations explicit; a short ten-year-old ``grows another foot''--from the top of his head--and a worried child is assured that there's no mouse in her hair (it's an elephant). Readers chortling their way through this inspired assemblage of cautionary tales, verbal hijinks, and thoughtful observations, deftly inserted, will find the temptation to read parts of it aloud irresistible. Silverstein's poetry is good for the soul both young and old
By Vincent Price - NOT
My kids immediately fell in love with Shel Silverstein's when I introduced them to his work about 7 years ago... They were 1 and 4 at the time. (The older one got his younger brother interested as the younger one got older.) They are now 8 and 11 years old, and they still get a kick out of reading Silverstein's poems: They laugh out loud when they read his poems, and I get great joy from that. So this is our 10th or so of his books, and the boys love it. Can't go wrong with silly, clean poems that bring laughter to little children. Good for adult hearts, too!

An interesting and enjoyable book to read. If you are a Shel Silverstein fan you will love this volume.
By Joseph J. Truncale
This is the third hardcover book I have read (Falling Up: Poems and Drawings by Shel Silverstein) by this author. As I have mentioned previously, this author has an original and unique talent to create unusual poems spiced with his drawings making his books interesting reads. I enjoyed this volume the most out of the three books I have read by Silverstein.

Each of the wonderful poems also includes the author’s own original and unique drawings. The combination makes for a fun to read book for both adults and younger readers. Like a lot of Silverstein’s books, there are messages and lessons of life we can all relate to reading his poetic words.
I really liked most of the poems in this volume, but some of my favorites in this book include the following: Sun hat, snow ball, unfair, crystal ball, no thank you, safe, my robot, sidewalking, Pinocchio, big eating contest, bad cold, people zoo, hypnotized, mirror, mirror, haunted, a battle in the sky, the mummy, a cat, a kid, and a mom, Lyin Larry, no, the smile makers and when I was your age.

If you are a Shel Silverstein fan you will love this book. I found it to be refreshing, amusing and entertaining.

Rating: 5 Stars. Joseph J. Truncale (Never trust a politician: A critical review of politics and politicians.

A Wonderful Literary Way to Bond with Your Family
By Jamie
Almost everyone knows about this book and its author so I don't really need to go into detail about that. What I will say is that it is an awesome family bonding tool. I have six kids, ages 1 to 19, and they all enjoy listening to the poems from this book together. I'm a huge fan. Some of my favorite readings are in this book. I definitely enjoy sharing things I remember from my childhood with my kids and this is one of them.

Well worth reading - and re-reading

GET THE MOST OUT OF LIFE
by Derrick Sweet

Author Derrick Sweet has crafted 86 chapters of ancient and contemporary wisdom from Marcus Aurelius to Wayne Dyer, inviting the reader to get right in and swim with the masters, applying their teachings to living today. The chapters are arranged in a purposeful order, and intended to be studied with notebook at hand, and paper for the occasional exercise.

The exercises encourage readers to have fun taking themselves seriously, as they explore avenues to developing their full potential. This is a book to grow with that reveals more and more with each reading. Read and grow rich with ideas and tools to make them go to work every day. The tone is companionable, inspiring and refreshing as Sweet pirouettes through ancient and current wisdom, for everyone interested in Getting the Most out of life.

Feel good motivational book
By Christina Coutu
I am a fan of this author because I have found that every time I open one of his books, I feel as though it has been written for me. I can relate to every page and every thought. I especially enjoyed the format of this book because I was able to easily pick up where I had previously left off. I kept this book in my purse and read it when I was caught in traffic, waiting for appointments, and before bed. In all situations, I found the book calmed me, encouraged positive thoughts and brought to light concepts which I already knew deep down but was having difficulty putting to words. I strongly recommend this book.

Very Biased
By Derrick Sweet
I wrote this book initially just as a "how-to" guide to live my own life with more meaning and purpose; and joy...of course. It's a good coffee table book, because each chapter takes about a minute or two to read.

The Monks and Monasteries of Constantinople, ca. 350-850, by Peter Hatlie

Between 350 and 850 Constantinople emerged as both the greatest city of the Mediterranean world and a monastic centre of unparalleled importance. Drawing upon a wide range of sources, including a rich body of hagiographical evidence, this study documents the historical relationship between the city and its monks during this crucial formative period. Monks and nuns played a key role from the beginning. In 350 their numbers were few, yet their impact on local politics and the church was significant. By 850 their presence was felt everywhere - from the world of the imperial court and church, to the local economy, elite culture, social services and popular piety. This dramatic rise in the influence of local monasticism was the result of its impressive numerical growth over time, and hard-won success in adapting the singular call of the monastic life to the challenges of the great medieval metropolis and imperial capital.

Review
Review of the hardback: 'This is [an] important book which fills a gap. It covers the crucial period before that treated in Rosemary Morris's excellent Monks and Laymen in Byzantium, 843-1118 (1995), and it provides a detailed and comprehensive treatment of the neglected subject of monks and monasteries in Constantinople itself. ... It will certainly become a standard work.' Journal of Ecclesiastical History
