Great overview of how data and the Internet of Things are already revolutionizing our lives

This book, all 353 pages, is a whirlwind tour through the impact that sensors, connectivity, and data are going to have on our lives (and how our lives are already changing). While this book is clearly not an instruction guide or a deep dive into any use case, the book presents dozens of perspectives and hundreds of examples to make you think. From the German railways, to museums, to GE aircraft engines, to Mercedes Benz and Nissan cars, to auto insurance "by the mile (or km)," to universities, to banking, to politics, to transportation, to Apple Stores, this book has vignettes and perspectives from many experts, academics, and practitioners in just about every field. How should you think about how the evolving digital revolution will affect your company, your society, and your life? This book will make you think.

The introduction by Marc Benioff was short but insightful, just as a bonus.

I enjoyed the book - it gave me some great information, but it also made me think. Worth a few hours of your time ...

Trite and Boring!

Author Streibich has credible credentials in the technology industry - both academic and actual network experience. Already there are over 4.5 billion connected on social networks, and it is estimated that there will be 3.5 billion networked products within a few short months. I, however, began the book with the strong suspicion that most current uses for product networking add little of value (eg. automatic thermostats already cover most needs for varying temperature); on the other hand, in one of my prior predictions I contended that PCs would never be serious competitors to mainframes (unable to handle large data flows), nor serious tools in most people's households. As for Toyota etc. providing tweet-like updates to alert drivers of low tire pressure - there is already onboard technology to accomplish that, and I don't trust card-dealers' service advice. As for Amazon, the jury is still out - it has done interesting things, but is unable to reliably make a decent profit, and the huge amount of added shipping and handling generated doesn't appeal to me either. Trackside railroad sensors - any decent trucking company already has software to better handle that too. So, I began the book - hoping to being proven wrong, again.

Chapters One and Two ('Introducing the Digital Enterprise,' 'The Digital Journey') were a waste of paper and time - just vague generalities. Chapter Three ('Create Smarter Products') was another snore - we already know about Google's self-driving car, and until that becomes widespread, integrating drivers with email, Facebook, etc. seems dangerous and stupid. A 'smarter shower' provides electronic controls for adjusting temperature and switching between rain-shower and hand-held showerhead flows - what does that have to do with any of today's world problems such as flagging economies (offshoring, automation), dysfunctional governments, global warming, etc?

And similarly, on and on and on it goes.

Expect to be challenged, expect to come away smarter

As a student of the enterprise, I have learned as much from Vinnie Mirchandani as any other author. Why? Because he challenges lazy assumptions. I know this from reading his previous books The New Polymath and the New Technology Elite. This latest is a collaboration with Karl-Heinz of Software AG. Let's face it - the idea of the Digital Enterprise is rapidly becoming a clich�. Streibich and Mirchandani counter the hype in the only way you can really counter it: with field research. Each key component of the so-called digital enterprise is backed up by customer case studies and examples.

The message is a potent one: the use of technology to transform business with everything from smart products to predictive data is NOT primarily attributable to enterprise software vendors, no matter how much chest-thumping they might do. Companies in each industry are applying these tech insights to separate from the competition. I was glad to see Streibich and Mirchandani included chapters that look at the human element of these industries, such as the chapter on services re-invention and the chapter on human capital.

One thing to keep in mind is that like Mirchandani's other books, this one is packed full of field examples. At 350+ pages this is not a quick skim. But that's the point. To really understand the digital enterprise and move beyond easy sound bites, you have to work at it. It's work that can change your career (or your company), so I recommend putting in the time.

Differentiate between viewers (who see words projected on a computer or projector screen) and readers (who read words on paper).

Introduction

      Within the last ten years, the practice of presenting written information on a screen rather than on paper has grown dramatically.  The essence of multimedia communications is its interactivity and the fact that you write in “layers” rather than a linear, traditional way. For those who may be “Trekkies,” I compare it to Mr. Spock’s three-dimensional chess game, which he liked to play on Star Trek. Unlike traditional chess, which is played on a flat, linear, one-dimensional surface, his Tri-D Chess is a three dimensional form of chess that requires its users to consider plays on a multi-dimensional platform. Not only must they consider the linear move in front of them, but they must also ponder the impact of those moves on separate, clear boards located above and below the main board.

 

     Each piece impacts a number of levels. Players have to remain aware of how every piece on every level interrelates. This reminds me of the challenge of multimedia writing. Not only must you ponder the linear story you must write on the main level, but also you must consider upper levels and lower levels accessible by hyperlinks or mouse clicks. You have to think about how each word connects to words on screens not yet visible. It is a form of three-dimensional writing that we are only beginning to comprehend, much less master.

Barbara Moran spent 20 years in "mainstream news" (as editor of a city magazine and a weekly newspaper, on-air radio news reporter, and staff writer for San Diego Union and Atlanta Constitution). In 1989, she left traditional media to become part of the new Web-based media. She worked for two search engines as an online editor, and she has freelanced extensively online. She wrote The Internet Directory for Kids & Parents (IDG Books) and contributed a chapter on multimedia writing to English for Careers: Business, Professional, and Technical by Leila Smith (Prentice Hall). Founder/ editor of her own K-12 educational Website (www.specialspecies.com), Ms. Moran serves as a communications consultant and teaches Internet-, computer-, and communications-related subjects at the college level (at San Francisco State University and San Mateo Community College District). She has her B.A. in telecommunications from Kent State University and her master's in instructional technology from the School of Education at San Francisco State University. About the Author
Antony Miall was born in the Lake District but migrated south at the age of nine months. He spent his childhood in Royal Tunbridge Wells where he had ample opportunity to observe the English at their most characteristic.
Apart from a brief spell in an educational establishment in one of the northern home counties, he has spent his life safely south of the Thames within easy reach of the South of France. This suits him very well because he has never quite qualified in Englishness. Among the subjects he is unable to get to grips with are discomfort and moderation.
In addition to shopping, his enthusiasms include playing the piano better than he thought he could. He also enjoys seeing his name in print and has written several books on Victorian songs and society. Now a public relations consultant, his clients have included the manufacturer of water beds for convalescent dogs.
Once happily married, he is now just happily in Wandsworth, has one daughter, three cats and a very significant other.
David Milsted, a typically mongrel Englishman (in his case, one-quarter Scots with trace elements of Viking), was born in Sussex in 1954 and subsequently drifted northwards, eventually spending 15 years on various Scottish islands before relocating, more or less accidentally, in Dorset, where he and his four sons constitute a 0.75% typical English family.
A former teacher, fireman and postman, he is now a full-time writer, researcher and editor who makes occasional forays into broadcasting, the theatre, and the strangely beautiful world of corporate malt whisky tasting. He has published four novels and a number of other books, the latest being The Cassell Dictionary of RegrettableQuotations.


For fifteen years Sussex-born David Milsted lived in the Scottish islands of Orkney, Islay, and Skye--which is as near to heaven as any whisky fancier could get. He claims that he would choose to work in a distillery if he ever had to get a proper job--which, fortunately, he hasn't. A professional author, his greatest pleasure besides writing is to run whisky tastings. He now lives in England.

I had read the Dutch version in this series which I really enjoyed and found useful before visiting Amsterdam. This guide was lacking in humor and useful info. Just the same old clich�s.

Not as good as the review of the Swiss
By Book loving mom
Having read the xenophobe's guide to the Swiss, and having lived in England, I truly hoped to get a real hoot out of this book. However, it was not nearly as irreverant as the Swiss book, which was a double whammy to me because that is EXACTLY what is so dear about the British people!! However, most of the points are valid and if you're simply looking for some clues about how to behave when visiting England, this book is probably pretty good for you.

About the Author
Daniel Gu�rin�was a prominent member of the French left for half a century. He published�The Brown Plague�in 1933 and�Fascism and Big Business�in 1936. His controversial, libertarian Marxist interpretation of the French Revolution,�Class Struggle in the First Republic, 1793–1797�was judged by his friend C.L.R. James to be “one of the great theoretical landmarks of our movement”.�Mitchell Abidor is the principal French translator for the Marxists Internet Archive. His translations include Anarchists Never Surrender, Voices of the Paris Commune, and Death to Bourgeois Society.�David Berry�is currently a senior lecturer in politics and history at Loughborough University, UK. His publications include A History of the French Anarchist Movement, 1917–1945,�New Perspectives on Anarchism, Labour and Syndicalism,�and�Libertarian Socialism. About the Author
Steve Gillon received his Ph.D. from Brown University. He has taught American cultural and political history at Brown, Yale, and Oxford. While a Professor at Yale, he was awarded the DeVane medal, a teaching award conferred each year by graduating seniors. He currently serves as Dean of the Honors College at the University of Oklahoma, and is Resident Historian at the History Channel. Dr. Gillon's books include THE DEMOCRAT'S DILEMMA: WALTER F. Pretty good for a Recent American College course text

I was pleased with this book for my Recent American college course. It isn't boring or full of a lot of detail. It has a lot of primary sources and is easy to read.

I have enjoyed reading this book so far and as a history major, post-1945 American history isn't my favorite time period. But I have learned a lot just from reading this book.

I was SO pleasantly surprised to find that this book was light years more progressive than history books of yesteryear and written in a very accessible style but NOT dumbed down...just articulated well. LOVED what the author said about values-related topics. Yeah, I think it's slanted pretty far left but then, so am I. Conservatives would have a FIT reading this.

Great for a Pokemon fan!

I purchased this for my child who is a Pokemon fan. He loves this handbook because it shows all the Pokemons from the Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, Sinnoh, Unova, and Kalos regions. This handbook is very colorful and gives you stats on the different Pokemons. It shows what each Pokemon can evolve into. It tells you how to pronounce each Pokemon, as well. Also, it even shows you their new power called Mega Evolution. Great purchase for my little Pokemon fan!

Spear-oh wait, that's not a Spearow!

So upon looking through every single Pokemon, we noticed that where a picture of Spearow should have been, they put a picture of Fearow! So I went back to see what picture was in place of Fearow to see if they accidentally switched the photos, but alas, they just apparently hate Spearow and put a picture of Fearow in place of both pictures. But that's apparently all that's wrong with it. Good thing I'm not a huge fan of either of those Pokemon.

I love this book

I wish I had found this book at the beginning of the semster. All of the needless reading of cases would have gone a lot faster. Very easy book to read, gives good examples, and explanations on underlying theories. Gives modern and classical views on different matters. I used this to study for my final, and it saved me so much time. At least cut my studying time in half because on average you can get through most of this book in a day and its so well explained that you don't need to take notes you'll remember the hypo's and the cases it references from your casebook. If you have a general idea of the concepts and have kept up with the readings in class, this book clarifies some of the gray area left unexplained in the case books. As well as reinforces your existing knowledge base. Definately worth the buy!

This book puts many contracts rules and theories into an easy to understand and apply context. It even attempts to be humorous at times. My professor did point out a few things he said were inaccurate, but my professor also holds a lot of unique views on law. If you're confused about contracts, this book can help.
